Heavy Metal & Arsenic Contamination in Grazing

I am interested in this too in case it was what caused our recent illness And deaths. One week on and still none the wiser

I know this is indirectly related, but i found myself in a similar quandry recently...your post I do understand is grazing related, but I wanted to mention just because I was really annoyed by the company.....if you have a mo, go on dogs naturally magazine on fb & theres a link to their site...they raised the issue of arsenic in the poultry industry(& and in some pork manufacturing too) not only for dog food...but for human poultry too...arsenic is injected/fed to boost weight gain in the young chickens...reducign keeping & fattening costs & increasing turn over. AWFUL....imagine we only eat chicken a couple of times a week....yet merrily feed our dogs complete chicken meal feeds daily for life. I buy a holistic brand...so you would think the company who are so into natural goodness would want to be able to confirm to me they knew the history of all meat & products coming into its uses in the making of their dogs feed....how disgusted was I when i sent a very polite email detailing the article(link included) and asking(as suggested) that they could confirm full tracability.the arsenic trace is negligable so won't necessarily show, tho its potential to harm is still very much unreduced no matter how visible or not.I then re sent after a month of no reply...I then sent it via recorded when i was blocked from emailing them my genuine request...still no response! I would love to name & shame, but want to give them a fair chance to redeem theirselves. What has this to do with horses? well I thought this after losing a horse last year of colic that wasn't.still none the wiser...possibly grass sickness or atypical myopathy? Then I thought along the same lines as you...what if the grazing had been fertilized with chicken poo??(stinks but it happens and could be considered organic?)and the same for the crops used to make our hay, straw & feed? yes its a long shot but I think this is a far deeper problem than these companies realise. Untraceable does not mean safe!I know a negligable amount tricling into the system in dogs/humans would be carcinogenic, and so yes, in horses, this could lead to all manner of symptoms including gastric ulcers/unexplained diseases & colics...and what else? I am probably going to be shot down here now, but it would possibly explain so much & many of our horses problems & worse...VERY interested to hear any more scientific views...I'll try dig out the article in the mean time...

Yes I have heard this before. If you go on to the BHWT (British Hen Welfare Trust) somewhere you will see daily 'stills' taken of a chick, from a chick to a P.O.L (point of lay) and one is a broiler hen (stuff injected into them/overfed) and one a 'normal' untouched hen. The difference in size is amazing especially as the days wore on the growth factor was totally amazing.

Anyway in order not to digress any further here is some info regarding the cleaning of contaminated soil.

I would think that the OP would be best to contact the Council regarding this as a first point of call.

Do not fear.....the local (& higher) authorities have been notified & many more people, come to that - and believe it or not, it would appear that the "system" is not as efficient as one would be led to think.... However, we are pushing hard for action, due to some awful experiences encountered!

Having looked into the effects of arsenic, I have come across articles that clearly state the detrimental effect that arsenic has to the neurological, renal, cardiovascular & gastric system & the heavy metal side of things throws up more issues such as liver damage...

It would be really helpful to hear more from anyone who has experienced this with horses ASAP.

One more thing - does the person that holds the lease on the yard/grazing have a responsibility to ensure that the land is "safe/fit" for the purpose that it is being sold as?

Would love to hear from anyone with relevant knowledge or experience of such topics.
