Went for a run with my brother and the dogs yesterday. We were on a footpath next to the river with a field full of long grass off to the right.

Heard a loud pheassie calling and before I knew what was happening, Hector was off and tried to clear a 3 strand barbed wire fence. Not sure how he misjudged it (it was very sunny) but next thing, he is 'caught' on the top strand and hanging face down

Luckily there were 2 of us, as we were able to unhook him straight away.

Thank god he didn't panic and stayed still. I felt sick as I turned him over expecting him to be torn, but he only has a small scratch/line

Will be extra aware from now on but it happened so fast, could have been horrendous so i'm so relieved - there's keen and there's stupid!

Gave him Metacam last night and he doesn't seem sore this morning.

Phew! Lucky boy.

B's been caught, stuck halfway over wire before (was a ditch on either side and he totally misjudged, I normally stick my coat over it if I need him to jump it) and like you was expecting him to be ripped to shreds but there wasn't a mark on him, they're tougher than we think sometimes!

No Quirky, imagine if i'd picked him up by his quarters and 'propped' him on the wire, so he's facing down with front paws about 6 inches off the ground :(

CC thank god they are - If i'd had time to see it was wire, i'd have called him off it. Coats work well but i'd also seen these before - think after yesterday I might invest!

Bloody hell, that sounds even worse :(.
Poor dog, must've been quite shocking.

My old YO's dad had a greyhound that was off after something and he snagged just behind his neck with barbed wire . I was horrified that he put some purple spray on it, I'm sure you could see muscle. He recovered eventually.

Poor Hector!! My Parent's quite frequently find beagles stuck like that when they're out beating, the get them loose and they leg it off back to the pack! Tough as old boots!

Otto ran through a hedge last year, and blindly straight through a old strand of barbed wire in it. He got tangled up by his ear and fought free before I could get him. Nice big slice down his ear and blood everywhere!! It was when we had all that snow too, so it looked like I killed someone then dragged their bleeding body back to the house!! :o :D

Ooch i'm wincing reading those - not squeemish but it's the thought of the tearing.

Saw the (old) carcass of a fox last year and you could see wire wrapped tightly around it's hind leg. Poor thing must have pulled it tighter and tighter the more it struggled and must have howled like anything :(

I hate barbed wire.

Oscar my big lurcher jumps wire all the time and I have my heart in my mouth every time but he has never once done worse than scratch himself (touch wood) but Dash the whippet can wriggle under the tiniest of gaps - and he is the one I am doing agility with

I hope your nerves are recovered now :)

When my anicent old boy (17 soon!!!) was a youngster he ran after some rabbits and unknown to us a barbed wire fence had half fallen so he ran into it ripping open from his chest to the end of his willy..cutting that almost in half!!!!! I was the most horrific thing I've seen and the blood was everywhere!!! I man handled him while holding the wound shut (thank godness he's a very small hound) and got him to the vets! Of course it was a sunday and the vets assitant was held up so I had to assist during the operation to stitch him up!! I'm not bothered by things like that but it being my own dog made it very hard to concentrate!! Needless to say I never allow my dogs to now run into unknown undergrowth! :(

Glad your lad is okay, it's so easy for a accident to happen..but then again we could wrap them up in cotton wool and what sort of life is that for a energetic dog?

Henry had a nasty experience too last year - he was running about in the woods and suddenly I heard all this screaming - he'd run over a barbed wire fence that had sagged right down low and had got caught on his hind leg. He was stuck while I was trying to make my way over to him, then freed himself as I got to him. Fortunately it was more fright than anything else, probably at suddenly being stuck and unable to get back to me, as it was only a shallow scratch. I really feared the worst, I couldn't see how he was caught and I was half expecting to have to make an emergency vet dash!

Poor Hector - I'm glad he's ok. I hate barbed wire too. Vile stuff:(

Eeeek, that was very scary to read! Glad the story had a happy ending! I also hate barded wire, but it seems to be my fate to have to remove miles and miles of it from every new property we buy!
