Hunting is off for a couple of weeks ( due to kennel cough aka hound flu to my un horsey friends!), and the hunt are organising hedge jumping instead. Some say it is a 'contest', some say a 'masterclass'. Having only hunted this year, i have never done one of these before. Will ring to find out more, but dont want to seem like a complete muppet! So how big are the hedges likely to be? i will be ok with 3 foot, but 4 foot and i wont bother going! Will there be ponies, of will it all be horses? I have a funny image of hedges getting bigger as we go across fields, and the one to make it furthest wins!

Any info anyone has really?
Waht should i wear if i do go?

Thanks

knowing the sort of hedges we come across that would be one thing i would be going to watch, not join in with! i haven't seen many 3ft hedges on our travels! i tend to go round them!

eek, i doubt it! i haven't really done any hedges yet, couple of 3ft ones, but we rarely find ones that small!

where are you hunting?

most of our hedges are 3'6" ish.

I normally don't do more than about 3foot, but good hedges are b.e.a.utiful to jump! on a brave horse, and with a good hipflask they just disappear underneath you.

I prefer jumping hedges, where the field can spread out and pick their line to the whole field trying to pile over one piddly little rail in the corner of a field.

Ring and find out, but if it's not too far out of your comfort zone, and your horse is brave (or you can borrow a brave one ;-) !) go for it.

Well hedges ca be any size really can't they!!

Kick on and hope for the best, go for a longer stride rather than a shorter one... it works for me! :p

Most of our hedges are 3ft there about though some defo 3ft6 plus.
Always aim for the thickest part so that horse makes conserted effort to jump it well rather than just thinking it can brush through the top.

If in doubt KICK ON!

I have jumped a 4'6" hedge once, I was fairly drunk it has to be said! I've got a pic and I'm laughing and my horse looks completely bemused!
Hedges are much easier than uprights, kick and you'll be fine.

I now hunt in the west mids in deep country where hedges are usually cut to size hunt fences with post and rail up to 3ft for stock - I dont count the fluff on top.

I did, however grow up going out with the Coakham blood hounds and the MSD.. They both have proper hedges where one learns to hail a cab fairly sharpish!
