ok so this is long......
I have an ex racer who last raced may last year, i purchased him beg aug. when i went to see him he was lovely and calm to ride and was even better at home, he went well for about 3 months, so much so that i could gallop him in open spaces without so much as a bat of an eyelid. he then had a few months off as i was pregnant and he had been ridden a few times on and off between with no issues by a friend. He has come back into work properly this last month and it is almost like he has had a personaltiy transplant to ride, he is spooky and jumpy and generally quite stressy. He goes from one day to the next, the other day he went beautifully then the next had bronking fits then fine then fits etc!!! I have had a look at the saddle felt down his back etc all seem fine. If he was in pain surely he would do it every time when ridden? also i used to be able to canter out with other horses now i panicxk at there even being other horses in the school. I have changed yards but this behaviour sarted before the move? he will go from lovely outline settled then sudden big szpook and bronk, god knows how i have stayed on so far!!!! i have booked the dentist and his feet are a bit overgrown so have the farrier comming out. could it be something as simple as overgrown feet though???????

all tack is the same, ame bit etc. I am not kicking, pulling etc to aggrivate him, its heart breaking as this horse when he was in work before was my perfect mount!! how has this happened in such a short space of time. i have a dressage clinic tonight which was booked a while ago, it is a group lesson, should i do it or not? its atg my yard and is stable is a matter of feet away, i have a feedmark calmer shot i am going to give an hour before hand. its nothing complicated just basic stuff.

I think it would be worth you doing the clinic to get another pair of eyes to look at him. Maybe it is something straight forward.

Good luck.

After having everything checked i would get a few lessons just to see what is going on.

If he were mine I would get him hacking out every day for a good month or so before re-introducing school work. Get him back in to that 'work' mode, and I'm sure you'll have your old friend back before you know it.

Sallysmith has a good idea there, get him back into normal work, could you find somebody to ride out with you as this is how racehorses work out in company or get in contact with HEROS they may be able to help

Have to agree with Sally - she speaks a lot of sense (as always)

I would also get any cereals and grains out of his feed - all mixes, balancers and so on. This can make a huge difference. They really don't need them.

Don't trust the calmers, few of them are proven really and who wants a "calmed" horse....?

Also - worth considering - if you have been pregnant and are now breastfeeding? Maybe you just smell different becuase you have been handling baby? He's possibly not sure of where he stands now, you smell strange...

We saw something extraordinary with one of ours - we took on an ex racer - slightly mad - very spooky - but my OH was breastfeeding our boy at the time and he would stand there with his head on the vertical rested against her chest, eyes closed, rocking side to side and making strange rumbling noises - he would stand like this for ages. It qas quite sweet, but very strange.

He also latched onto the little boy and for the last 10 years the little boy has been the center of his affections - they are amazing together and the horse just adores him.
