I think my girl has heel mites. I noticed her legs were warm under her feathers 2 days after she arrived home (only had her 2 weeks) and she was stamping her feet and itching them on everything.

I've been putting camrosa ointment on for the past week which has helped - but it was tricky getting it on under her feathers - so clipped her legs out totally yesterday! :D

I can now see the sore bits and will keep putting the camrosA on. Any other tips. Do I just leave the scabs to heal on their own?

Also wonder about putting brushing boots on when we hack - she's only 4 and is quite clumsy - I don't want her to bang her legs now they are clipped, or to get mud in her sore bits, but wonder if brushing boots will rub her legs / sore bits.

Ivomectin as a wash - ask your vet - superb!

(I was advised to do this from an equine dermatology professor at an equine hospital - my boy had had dectomax, foot stamp and PO&S religiously)

The injections work very well, a cob at our yard has them, if he doesnt have the jab he gets mites all over his body, poor boy has to be fully clipped

Red has not suffered badly (touch wood) he is more of a mud fever sufferer but i did find a mix of pig oil and sulphur worked well (which i use for his mud fever).

The sulphur should kill the mites and the pig oil coats the feathers to stop the mites reattaching. Some say this doesnt work as mites come from beneath the skin??

It works for me, worth giving a try and it leaves the feathers in beautifull condition. If its more severe i would go with the injections

Had a similar problem with my Shire horse. Used a product called 'Foot Stamp'. Think it was by global herbs or something like that.

Sounds good. Do you think I need to wait till the sores have gone - or cani use on sore skin? Do you just rub it in or actually wash it off afterwards?

I've found the easiest and most effective is to spray with frontline (flea treatment for dogs ) repeat in 10 days

Cattle 'Spot On' works for mine, they have a squirt on each leg every autumn and haven't had problems since :-)
