at last, my mare got a bit thrushy at the beginning of the year (1st time ever for one of my own) she was at a friends yard being backed and as she becoming a problem due to walking through fences she was restricted to one field and yard turnout. the result was a bog in the field and a wet pooey yard despit being cleared out each day and her walking round in it.

it has taken until now for her to be consistently landing heel first and all signs of thrush has gone.

the biggest secret with her has been to rasp her heels and bars away so the frog has been forced to do some work-i imagine this makes the blood flow increase/promotes healing and as the frog regrows and wears away the thrush goes with it.

but we are finally back to growing some beefy frogs that are healthy and dry looking with no smelly gunk.

hurrah!

will post some pictures when I can but my new camera got run over and my phone broke so that will have to wait a while am just so pleased as it really is best foot/hoof forward again now :D

I have recntly had a prob with my lad, found on friday he had maggots eating away at the middle of his frogs were all black, gunky and smelly so thrush like aswell, he has been off and walking oddly for few weeks assume this is why ( gutted i didnt spot it) is a post in the tack room with full story.

he was walking off his heel, putting his toe down then jarring his knee as heel went down and tripping alot , assume the maggots is the reason. Anyway i am now treating daily but was wondering how long it will take him to get back to his old self, he has been lethargic and stubborn ( now i no why boy do i feel guilty) and just generally off in his work.( was your mare similar) i am currently resting him.

his front one looks better already although still has a deep crevice back ones are taking longer although all maggots are now gone still has the holes and cevice they left down middle of his frogs.

any suggestions what to do to strenthen and and help repir his frogs.?

my mare has been fine in herself was just not landing truely heel first and was a bit tentative over small sharp gravel/stones, was always fine on tarmac and rounded stones. she is now stomping away over all surfaces-mine is barefoot.
i did see your post does not sound nice, i cant remember from your thread if he is shod or barefoot. personally if he is shod i would remove his shoes and offer support by means of hoof boots and deep bedding, as mentioned above the frogs getting some stimulation will increase the blood flow and speed up/increase healing.

TBH I would be suspicious that something else is pulling him down as it does not seem right that a healthy frog should be able to be attacked in that way by maggots or that flies would be able to gain access to 3 out of four feet when horses spend so much time standing-that may just be cos i have never heard of it before but it does seem very odd-now you are treating it and it is resolving I hope he is quickly back to his normal self but i would keep a close eye on him if i were you

Hi thanks for reply, he is shod, will have a word with my farrier about removing his shoes, he hasnt been unsound at all just walking on his toe and seems a bit sore.

I asked my farrier and vets re the cause as i was concerned as to why it had happened but both assure me is nothing untoward going on and they have seen several cases the same this year so not overly worried in that respect, Infact since i put a post on facebook several people have come back to me saying when they checked thier horses had them to, is crazy lol, the farrier and vet say is caused by standing in droppins with fly eggs on and eggs hatch in the feet, i to have never seen or heard of it in 25 years of horses lol.

Vet said can make him quiet if he is sore, but i have looked at other issues re this prob ie changed his feed, adding supplements and altering his regime so hoping once feet are healed and new regime has been going a while he will come right, fingers crossed. :)
