Right, I was picking out my mares feet today and noticed the cracks in her heels seem to have got deeper and more. I noticed them a few days ago but didnt think too much of it (bad move - lesson now learnt!). The cracks are just behind the wide bit of the frog - not up the leg really. There is no blood or oosing and my mare didnt react to me picking out her feet as normal or probing around the cracks, which indicated no pain. she doesnt appear to be lame either. Also, the frogs have now got 'flappy bits' peeling off in quite big flaps...bit concerned and cant for the life of me work out whats going on!

The farrier came out to her only 3 weeks ago and said her hooves were lovely and in good order, since her trim (she is barefoot) her feet seem to have got worse.

I have ruled out thrush (may be wrongly) as the frog is not black or smelly or sore. Totally confused! She has codlivine suppliment every day and has done for the last 2 months.

Any ideas?! Either of what it could be or what I can do to help stop these cracsk getting deeper and worse?

Im trying to guess from your description, is it like the one below? Does your farrier use his hoof knife and trim at the frog?

kind of - she has the big crevice just behind the frog as this horse shows,...but the cracks are in and off of that - almost between the hoof and the skin - like if the cracks carried on (a long long way to go - but to try and explain) the hoof would come away from the leg/skin...not sure if that helps - I will try and remember my camera tomorrow and take a picture (although still havent worked out how to up-load them onto the site :0S )
