Is there a chart for horse size vs rider height and weight? I've never found one so just wondered. I'm 5ft 8 and 10St 4lb. My boy is a solid 15.2 but some times I think I'm too lanky (especially legs) for him. I don't mean weight I mean proportions (in me) but a general chart/equation would be interesting to see. Sometimes I feel better suited to the.16.2 I school on x

There are too many factors to be considered on both sides for a chart of exact rule to work. For height things like how you are built, horse barrel size and how well he takes up your leg. Your saddle, position etc. For weight - your balance, experience, fitness and softness, how you carry your weight, saddle fit for both and weight. For the horse his build, bone, length of back, fitness, age, any weaknesses etc - the list goes on! :D

For what its worth, you dont sound too big :)

I think the general rule is a horse can take 20% of his bodyweight. I prefer to include the horse's tack and when the eider is wearing all their riding gear to err on the side of caution.

Of course, rider fitness plays a part as does horse fitness as well as the factors alanaix has mentioned.

I'm 5'6 and weigh just under 9.6 stone, horse is an approximately 14hh leg at each corner native type. I feel fine on him & he carries me easily over all terrain & jumps :) I'd often like a longer neck on him when junping or if he's in the mood for acrobatics :D

I would always stick to maximum 15% including tack. I am tall with long legs and while not overweight, am not a stick insect so that means 16.2 plus with a bit of bone...my gelding is a mw 17.3 and I actually look right on him. My vet has a big thing about rider weight and tbf, I think he has a point.

Proportion wise, my 17.1 Clyde cross is perfect for me. I'm 5'11, but I ride with quite short stirrups, even for flatwork. I definitely have weight to lose, which I am working on, but I feel that my horse carries me well, she's quite solid and probably fitter than me!

5 ft 4 and about 9 stone 4. Ride a 14.2 fairly lightweight cobby type Sometimes feel my legs are too long but everyone says I look fine on him.

I am the same weight & height as you op also with a long leg my two horses are both 16.2hh IDs which I feel is about right for me but there are so many variables one of which is what you are used to & actually prefer riding
