How cruel and unnecessary is this:

You can see for yourself how stressed the poor animals are by there windsucking and the shires muzzles they are wearing (presumably to stop biting at the silly humans that visit them).

Its an awful. I'm all for learning about different breeds of the world but these 'displays' have emotional and physical needs that are a million miles from being met. What you would expect to see in China though :(

I don't like it, but tbh I don't agree with keeping horses constantly stabled anyway and that's often the norm on many livery, competition and riding centres over here. I'd hope they get daily exercise or overnight turnout or that they'd even be displayed on rotation. On googling, i'm quite shocked though that they appear to have no forage or bedding.

Why is anyone even surprised? They've got a polar bear living in a blue prison in a shopping mall. There's a travelling dolphin show where they store the dolphins when they're not performing in a bathtub suspended in sling in a sardine tin, TCM made from rhino/elephant tusks and other endangered animals is worth more than the pharmaceutical market there. Eat dogs and cats. Throw away babies in trash cans or just the gutters. China is a crazy place. The horses live in luxury in comparison to some people even.

It's part of/an add on to an equestrian club/training facility. So it would be interesting to know how these guys fit in with that :). It is suggested elsewhere that they are only on display before the evening dressage (spanish riding style) performances that are put on?

How many vices and stress related behaviours can you count? Where is the hay ,water and bedding? I hope they are not in there long, and have a healthier lifestyle otherwise.

Awful! :( It seems lots of different species are being abused from previous comments :( One that really sickens me is the dog meat trade :( Check out Candy Cane Rescue on Facebook, a fab rescue trying their best but truely heartbreaking :(

This thread is getting a wee bit, erm, well, hardly going to improve east-west relations...

The horses don't actually live in those stables as far as I can tell - just exhibited there for a while before the shows. So, as long as it is not for very long, no different really to riding/driving for a couple of hours during which horse may well not have water, food or bedding.

What is lousy is obviously that they are stabled but, so are many, many UK horses. It isn't clear to me what exercise these get but there are probably worse sights on many livery yards here...

I have no objection to any animal that is potentially going to be in contact with the public being muzzled in a comfortable fashion - plenty of dogs are here and in some places it is even a legal requirement for certain breeds (Au I think?).

In fact, if you think about what happens when some iconic British horses are on display (household cavalry anyone? no/food/water/bedding/even ability to move when on duty and no grazing) we have no real leg to stand on taking a nation-focussed view...

It's possible to dislike this and dislike the use of animals in military situations too, they aren't mutually exclusive

Slightly off topic but I went to Madeira for Christmas and New Year some years ago, whilst strolling through a town in the distance I could see horses outside some shops <hooray I thought>
they were stuffed horses and were nailed down as a feature for Christmas

I found it very strange
