Hello lovely hhoer's, this is totally hypothetical but i've just been to see my friends gorgeous week old Foal and she is thinking of keeping him entire, so it got me thinking about whether he'd be a good daddy for my welsh mare! Only thing is i'm wondering if it would be too much of a cross? She is 3/4 section D 1/4 gypsy cob, he is ISH X TB X WB What do ya think peeps?
 
I wouldn't worry about the crossing but I certainly wouldn't make any decisions until you know what he'll grow up like! He could have awful conformation, poor temperament and no talent for anything. Also, you should choose a stallion specifically for your mare and make a proper decision on whether your mare is good enough to breed from and if you have the time/space etc to bring it on- particularly if it would be for yourself.
 
Hi Farrier lover, don't worry i would not consider breeding for breeding's sake, it would be for myself and i would only choose the perfect stallion, i know both dam and sire of my friends Foal and both have great conformation, temps etc. So just thinking if he turns out the same maybe he would be a good choice! My mare has fantastic temperament and conformation she is only just 4 so would not want to breed for a while yet so that i can continue her education! Only wanted to know what people thought of the cross!
 
well the said foal will not be ready for covering till at least 3 years old! the perfect stallion will be graded registered and proven himself as a compitition/role model in some degree that takes us another 4 years on! so in another 7 years you could ask the question again! your 5 grand would be better in some sort of investment fund! which a foal would not guarantee any return !
 
On paper at this moment, I can't think of anything more indiscriminate! Foal needs to have some definite, proven heritage which may suggest he has potential. Then he needs to prove himself, then some of his foals do, then I might consider it! Your mare would be late teens by then...
 
So, to summarise, your mare is, you believe, well put together and has a nice nature and you would like a foal in the future. Her breeding is mixed so there is a degree of uncertainty about which genes may be more dominant in her.

Think about what kind of horse you might like for yourself. If you breed to this colt you may end up with a complete tank if all those Draft and Cob elements come to the fore...or conversely a fairly dainty Welsh x TB type.

The only way to have some control over the outcome is to use horses that are true to their breed and type with a checkable family history.

In your case, depending on what you want to produce, I would be going back to Welsh or to TB.
