Hello, I'm new to this group but thought I would ask some advise as very knowledgeable peeps on here.
I have a Welsh section A, he's 11.1 and just turning 13.
We have owned him for 9 years and he has always been very greedy and would eat anything. He always been a good size and normally using the winter to slim him off abit. He has never been laminate just abit "round".
At the end of winter 2014 he dropped weight but more then he has since owning him and was looking abit on the skinny side which I thought was strange as he was still hard fed with sugarbeet, mollychaff and conditioning mix once a day and hay as the grass wasn't to great.
He seemed to pick up a little through the good grass months but I haven't been able to stop feeding him as he just not gained a lot and and had to up his food to twice a day.
In Feb I called the vet out as his weight was looking worrying at 185kg
He did have lice which he has been treated for and he has had teeth done and fully up to date with worming.
The vet took bloods and came back as low protein? She also took bloods for cushings which came back negative.
The vet gave him time to pick up abit then re took bloods which came back still low protein with no change.
He been having extra supplements to add to his feed with oil and he's still losing weighing 181kg.
Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome?
We are extremely worried about but have no idea what could be going on with him.

Hi, you say he's up to date with worming but have you had a faecal egg count done? When was he tested for cushings? Is he grey as melanomas are obviously more common with grey ponies.

What are you feeding him currently?

I had the vet out since and they proceeded with an ultrasound and also took fluid which I should get the results back for this on friday. The ultrasound is showing that he has thickening of the small intestine wall.
He is bay.
Egg count has not been done and he was tested for cushings last
month.
He is fed sugarbeet, conditioning mix, mollychaf and extra supplements to try and add protein and I also add cod liver oil for calories.

Thankyou for your reply.

Hello Crackerz, He has bloods which I'm not to sure but it check a whole range of things and that's where his low protein was found. The test was repeated around a month after which had no change. The only other test was cushing s which was negative.
The vet preceded with the ultrasound yesterday which showed thickening of the small intestine wall and fluid to check the cells yesterday which I should find out the results tomorrow.
If the test for Ems is a specific one then he hasn't had that checked.
This morning he seemed abit unsteady on his feet so not sure if this has anything to do with what's going but I'm just closely monitoring his behaviour.
The only other thing that I forgot to mention is he has completely on off feed and hay but is still grazing. He fully up to date with his dentistry.

No he hasn't then. They did mention about doing a glucose test I think. I just want him to be back to his normal self. He has been in our family for 9 years and I'm beside myself with worry.
