Hello everyone.

Have come across this board and was hoping some of you may be able to help me out. I am currently studying at Lincoln Uni and am in the initial stages of planning a dissertation about popular reward based training techniques. I have prepared a few simple questions and was hoping that as many of you as people would complete them for me. Feel free to reply via PM or just post below. The more replies the better and I can then plan the next stage.

As this relates to both dogs and horses, I wasn't sure where to post it. Thought I'd start here but if you think it'd do better in another section, please let me know.

May thanks and any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Rachel.

Are you familiar with the term ‘clicker training’?

If so, how did you hear about it?

Have you had a go at it and if so, what type of animal did you train?

What behaviours did you train?

What did you think of clicker training when compared to other positive reinforcement training methods?

If you have only trained your dog previously, would you consider trying it with your horse? If not, can you please explain why.

What other training methods do / have you used with your animals?

How do you think they compare to clicker training?

If you would be happy for me to contact you with a more thorough questionnaire in the future, would you please PM me with your name and email address.

Many thanks

Are you familiar with the term ‘clicker training’? YES

If so, how did you hear about it? I used it to train my current dog

Have you had a go at it and if so, what type of animal did you train? Dog

What behaviours did you train? all basic obedience up to Kennel club Gold award standard + some basic agility

What did you think of clicker training when compared to other positive reinforcement training methods? similar

If you have only trained your dog previously, would you consider trying it with your horse? If not, can you please explain why. no, i dont believe that horses brains work quite as quickly or in the same way as dogs. and how many disciplines would allow a clicker in the ring?!

What other training methods do / have you used with your animals? Basic food reward training, and praise training

How do you think they compare to clicker training? again, on a par.

You are welcome to contact me for a more thorough survey.

If so, how did you hear about it?

[/ QUOTE ] From magazines and also from a friend who is an animal trainer

Have you had a go at it and if so, what type of animal did you train?

[/ QUOTE ] Yes - dog - also a little bit of work with horses

[ QUOTE ]
What behaviours did you train?

[/ QUOTE ] Sit, lie down, recall, give paw, walk on lead for dog, target training for horse.

[ QUOTE ]
What did you think of clicker training when compared to other positive reinforcement training methods?

[/ QUOTE ] Depends on the behaviour being trained - best method where timing is important.

[ QUOTE ]
If you have only trained your dog previously, would you consider trying it with your horse? If not, can you please explain why.

[/ QUOTE ] N/A

[ QUOTE ]
What other training methods do / have you used with your animals?

[/ QUOTE ] Traditional methods, including negative reinforcement

[ QUOTE ]
How do you think they compare to clicker training?

[/ QUOTE ] Clicker training for dogs definitely seems to get the dog more focused on the owner/trainer and more eager to please.

Are you familiar with the term ‘clicker training’?
Yes

If so, how did you hear about it?
Probably read about it, sorry can't be more precise
Have you had a go at it and if so, what type of animal did you train?
Yes. I use it frequently, both with horses and dogs, oh and a rabbit (don't laugh)
What behaviours did you train?
Dogs: Basic obedience
Horses: Basic obediance again such as standing, touching a target, lifting feet, moving over, back, head down, also simple tricks for a bright and easily bored horse, I also taught him to rear on command on the lunge as he would do it anyway and was downright dangerous. Once he had learned to rear on command, I stopped asking and life was safer.. Rabbit: Sit and beg!

What did you think of clicker training when compared to other positive reinforcement training methods?
With a food/reward orientated animal I have been pleased and have had results either quicker or as quickly. With some horses and dogs that are either slightly less intelligent (or perhaps too intelligent) or are not food orientated progress has been slow and in the case of one horse non-existent, she hated the sound of the clicker

If you have only trained your dog previously, would you consider trying it with your horse? If not, can you please explain why.
I tried it with horses before I did it with the dogs

What other training methods do / have you used with your animals?
Basically the same but without the click, "Foot up/sit/stand"(etc) "Good boy" Fuss, fuss. ARE there other ways?

How do you think they compare to clicker training?
A little slower perhaps.

Are you familiar with the term ‘clicker training’?
Yes
If so, how did you hear about it?
A horsey friend first then a dog trainer
Have you had a go at it and if so, what type of animal did you train?
No
What behaviours did you train?
No
What did you think of clicker training when compared to other positive reinforcement training methods?
I think its a good method of training but not always practical, you are reliant on always having the clicker to hand, I prefer to use a short sharp word command in lieu of a clicker to reinforce positive behaviour
If you have only trained your dog previously, would you consider trying it with your horse? If not, can you please explain why.
No, partly similar to above, ie a faff to carry clicker around all the time
What other training methods do / have you used with your animals?
Dogs, positive reinforcement using food and voice, horses - just basic common sense!
How do you think they compare to clicker training?
I haven't had any problems with my current method of training so would be in no hurry to change
If you would be happy for me to contact you with a more thorough questionnaire in the future, would you please PM me with your name and email address.

Many thanks
