Hello and opinions on microchip scanner

Hi , This is my first post on Horse and hound , though I have been reading the magazine for years , for some reason I have never joined before .... But I am glad to be here now !

My reason for this post was to ask what peoples opinions are of this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal...tchen_Steamers_Cookers_PP&hash=item19f35eab48 , Microchip scanner ? . Has anyone had any experiences with it , is it sensitive enough ?

There are at least 7 different chip systems at present and as yet there is no scanner that will read all the diferent microchips.
The scanner above will only read microchips that comply with the new European ISO microchip standard (ISO is a European version of British Standards).
All microchips distributed within Europe will need to comply with this standard if they are to be used to identify a horse that are to be passported with the new central equine data base as from next year.
It is likely that many horses will have to be re-microchiped so that they have the necessary microchip within them that complies with the new ISO standard for microchips so that they can be registed with the European database.

Thank you for your reply . If no one scanner can read all chips , how do vet check them ? Do they carry 7 different scanners ?

I hope to goodness this isn't the case, do you know of there is an idea as to whether horses chipped after a certain date will have been chipped with the European standard? (Hope this reads right as I'm shattered), I'm praying one of my wee men won't have to be re chipped as a very rude naughty vet I'd never used before caught a blood vessel in his neck while chipping him and the poor wee lad is still traumatised with vets!

I've had to rechip a horse I bought in May because the original chip was one of the least common apparently- our vet carries two makes of scanner and neither picked up his chip so be be on the safe side I had him re done as well as transferring the ownership of the first chip.

I have dealt with dogs the I know have been chipped and with what chip and yet nothing shows as read on the scanner-sometimes the chip is faulty so does not read.
