Hi guys,

Firstly I am going to get the vet out but until the snow goes they cant get anywhere near us so I want you to satisfy my curiosity!

Mare had surgery for kissing spines about 3 months ago now, due to all the weather she's been stood in her box basically for all that time although we have taken her for a few short walks, let her wander around in hand and stuff. We turned her out for a few days before the snow really set in and she absolutely loved it and is moving like an absolute dream its incredible.

BUT: there is a lump on her back where I assume the surgery took place (she had two areas removed, but only one lump). Its hard, doesnt feel like swelling but it did go down a little bit when she was out and moving.

SO, will it go down? Is it anything to worry about? Will she need a new saddle?

Thanks xxxx

It might be the supraspinous ligament? Where the dorsal processes have been removed, this ligament now is not attached (this is how I understand it anyway from my physio...?). Dotty's has gone down with daily massage with arnica gel, but hasn't gone away completely - probably never will. It doesn't affect her saddle - I had the saddle fitter out to check - although I now use a numnah half lined with sheepskin.

Poor you having to cope with KS rehab in the snow - I did ours over the summer which made it less arduous I suspect. Good luck!

How big is the lump? When did it first appear?

If it's right at the surgery site it could be scar tissue, otherwise it could be a granuloma, which is basically an inflammatory reaction. Granulomas can disappear on their own but they can also get infected. If you notice it growing this is generally a sign that you need to do something about it. They can be removed, but you wouldn't be able to ride until the site healed.

Bridie has a little lump i think where it got infected and they said its just calcified bone...if i remember rightly! does her no harm...but best you get the vet to check it!

I agree with Booboos comments - hopefully it will go down with time, exercise and massage, but there is possibly some scar tissue that will remain. If you think it is getting bigger then you should do something about it.

Hope the vet can get to you soon!

Sue
