Hello ++ making a mounting block?

Firstly, Hi :), I’m new to the forum and I’m starting with an enthralling question….

Have any of you ever made a mounting block?

I’m considering making one. At the moment I use a plastic step/grooming box thingy but was hoping to create something more sturdy and stationary.

First question would be what to make it out of?
I thought wood first, but if its sitting out on the yard I don’t want to rot away and for me to casually fall through it one day :eek: .
Then I thought braes(sp) blocks, but would the corners be a bit sharp (I own a beyond stupid horse)? Plus it may look a bit of an eye sore. :confused:

That’s all I’ve really considered so far. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I’m also not hugely against buying one, but they seem very expensive for what is essentially a ‘step’

Hi hubby made me a fab huge mounting block using a few steps cut off from an old reclaimed wooden staircase. It's actually really good and very sturdy. We have plenty of steps over so I want him to make another for use at our summer grazing. We just treated it with Ronseal 10 year seal or suchlike and it seems pretty water resistant.

My Oh made me a mounting block from the patten and instructions below.

We actually did away with the step and made it higher (it comes to the middle of my thigh and I am 5ft 6!) so when on top my stirrup is about 2 inches above the top when I am mounting my 16.3 beast.

Yes it is made of wood but we varnished it a couple of times and it sits outisde quite happily with a yearly re-coat.

OH put some hand grip hole in it so we can move it about and it comes in very handy for grooming a very tall back that I otherwise can not see! My only problem is that every one in the yard after saying "oh I don't need one of those" now uses it:-)

If you want a mobile one build it from 18-22mm plywood and paint it. It won't last forever but it will be pretty damn sturdy.

If you are happy with a static one then blocks are fine :)

Hello and welcome:)

Ours is not very sophicticated, but it works a treat. We simply wired two beer crates together. It's lightweight too, so we can easily take it with us when we ride in the field )and it cost us nothing:D)
 
We've got a breeze block one, 4 on the bottom, then three then two. It's great, has been outside the barn for about 15 years, I did move it from one side to the other about five years ago (it isn't cemented together!)

Appylass, your puppy is adorable and making very good use of your mounting block :).
 
Our mounting block is made of a large lump of granite. Which I think is expensive, but it's been thwacked by lawn mowers....horses...cars....and is very much still there and in one piece.

I think, as someone else has said they have, a structured pile of breezeblocks would work fabulously, is very cheap, and you don't need to pay for anything to be delivered etc etc. Also, if you don't cement them together....you can move it all to a different place if you wanted!!
