I have just taken on a 16 yr old 14.2 haflinger who is diabetic and has had laminitis in the past he hasn't been ridden or done anything with for over a year and I've been slowly bringing him on he is quit bolshie bangs for attention and always seems hungry. I was thinking about giving him a small hard feed twice a day he goes out weather and frost permitting he's the only one on our yard that can (he's the owner's horse) every day for at least a hour there not much grass thou so he has 12/13 lb hay a day. If any one has any tips or advice I would be grateful.

Is he thin or greedy? Does he run out of hay regularly and stand with no food? If he runs out, soak the hay and feed more. I doubt a bucket feed would help, though a handful of chaff with added vitamins would be useful as he's getting older.

And welcome :)

No he's not thin at all thou he has lost weight since I started working him but he looks much better for it.I think he's just greedy and very food orientated to the point I don't give him treats anymore. I am gonna try soaking his hay I think as he always runs out of hay and you would think he'd never been fed when I hang a new one.
Thank you.x
