Just introducing myself. I am a mature rider with an ex-race trained TB mare that is being schooled for dressage (a challenging but additive experience!). I want to contribute to threads around money saving tips, and fly and mosquito problems, having used an all natural product called EquiAide Fly Buster for over a year now that suits my TB. Hopefully, I will get to grips with posting quite soon. Liz

Hello.
Would love to know more about your mare. How long have you had her?

I'm off to google the fly spray you mentioned; I'm stuck between a strong one that my horse doesn't like, or a citronella one he doesn't mind but isn't as good at keeping the flies away.

Hi. I have been riding her 3 years and took ownership a year ago. She has quite a few issues and can be very difficult when the summer sunlight arrives (lots of startle responses, spectacular spooks, etc.) but I decided that I was in for the long haul because I like challenges and have always learned so much from this sort of horse. I recently dropped the Magnitude (having stopped giving her ProCalm some time ago)and put her on D & H's Stroppy Mare and I love it - she now seems to love her work in the school and, crucially, she has that forward going energy that gives me something to work with.

The Equi-Aide fly buster is a concentrate containing plant extracts and you dilute it with water so it makes 5 litres. I had tried everything and this is just as effective as the big name brands (and it doesn't have any harsh ingredients that sting). I spray it on every day and use a sponge around her eyes. It seems really effective against midges too (I start spraying in March as they are quite bad by then where she is kept). Some of the ingredients have an anti-inflammatory action, so if a fly or midge does get through then you don't get the usual big lump and irritation. It is worth trying and the leaflet says it can also be mixed with oil to apply like a lotion to keep it on any sore areas when it rains. Good luck with it all!
