Can anyone recommend a helmet camera that attaches easily to a riding hat, has a decent picture and doesn't cost the earth?

Going cross country in a couple of weeks for the first time in 15yrs and thought it might be nice to have a reminder!

I just got my dad one for his 50th birthday yesterday. He's into mountain biking and snowboarding. Its called gopro camera and i got the black at £360 but that was top of the range, they start at about £200.

I used one that attached to my chest, it was amazing!! It was a GoPro that the man had leant me, not sure how much it is, will have to ask him! He's a warranty technician and once in a while gets a free one (LUCKY!!!)

I bought my daughter a cheap one from a motorcycle Internet site. I think it was www.2wheeljunkie but can't see it on there now (but I may not be searching correctly). It was only about £30 and it seems to work well.

My OH bought me one for xmas.

It's an AEE action camcorder. We saw and loved the gopro but after lots of research he said this was better for the money. ..though I don't know what he paid for it. Think it came from Maplin.

My daughter bought herself a Contour roam 2. It's much neater than the go pro and she took it snowboarding last month. She has also used it a few times riding but so far only indoors. Quality is fantastic and easily fits onto riding hat. It cost about £150 so unfortunately a bit over budget.

Are you allowed to use these out on the roads to report idiotic drivers or is that frowned upon as an invasion of privacy nowadays?

Attached to your chest? You are not as well developed in that area as me then. :D

My dad is a ski-ing, moutain climbing, pick axe climbing of some sorts freak and he has the the Gopro I think. I thought it was called Eyepro but I guess not.

I have one I'm kit sure of its name though ill try and dig it out. I've had it two years though and haven't used it so I can't comment in how good it is, I doubt I ever will use it either :/ it was a present so I doubt it was particularly expensive x

I have one. I wear it pretty much everytime I hack out. Mine was about £40.
Someone on here I think it was rhino(?) who has a great one that she only paid about £10 for from ebay.

I didn't want to spend much on something that could get smashed if I have a fall. It was bought as a "toy" but now I wear it all the time. I do ride on very busy roads.
This is taken with the lower resolution
Where it goes squeaky on the sound is where it gets compressed uploading to youtube it's not like that on the original. A tip I was given is if you have problems with a vehicle say the number plate out loud to record it.

We've got the go pro: http://www.youtube.com/WestridingEGB

Ours was one of the original ones and we've had it about 5 years now. Still going strong despite a fair bit of abuse although if we had some spare money lying around (!) I would upgrade it for a new one.

I think to a certain extent you get what you pay for, so it depends on the size of your budget and what you want. There are much cheaper ones which are perfectly adequate for videoing local road hacks ;)

I have the Action Cam3 which is HD 720P. It cost around £55 from Amazon.
Bought it to use around xc courses and to go skiing.
Absolutely brilliant, my other half even uses it when he goes out in his sportscar.

The only downside, is the wind noise, but i cover the microphone over with selotape and edit music in afterwards!!

Trial and error as to where to put it when riding. At present its in the middle of the hat, but might put it on the side today for my jump lesson, just to see how that works. (apparently, i nod my head quite a bit going xc!!).

There was a cheaper model, which was around the £30 mark, but i wanted the higher definition.

I have a veho muvi, micro action camera, cost £50 or thereabouts, only tried it once but picture quality good.

I have the drift X 170 for recording my lessons with - its fine on my head but I cant cope with it on the side of my hat as its too bulky and tips my head to one side!

Quality is v good though on it :)

I have done research into these after previous member. I have spoken to this seller and he recommends this one as it fixes well onto a riding helmet. If you contact him direct he may give a discount like he did me .

Hi
The other item you mention is the HEDCAM. We have these reduced to £125 with the 8GB card on our website. The BulletHD would be upgraded the BulletHD 2 and includes an 8GB card.
The video quality is the same on both products, the high pixels of the BulletHD relates more to the quality of the stills as it takes stills too. The HEDCAM is a smaller and lighter product whilst the BulletHD has more features such as stills, removable battery with a spare included and a wider angle lens.
What will you be using it for? Maybe I can better advise of I know this?

Hi
I would definitely say the HEDCAM, it works really well with a riding hat and is really lightweight. If you would like to go ahead please
call me on xxxxxxxxxxxand I can offer you the discounted price.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEDCAM-WI...ctronics_Video_Camcorders&hash=item232659b122

Leviathan I have PM'd you. Thanks everyone I am looking into them all. Stupid question but those that aren't secured via a belt, how do they stay on? I didn't want one that is secured on my hamlet at my ear, would prefer something on the top/front of my helmet

ooooooooh how exciting i need to get me one of those gadgy me bobs.. although am not sure it would be good to have too much incriminating evidence around of what i get up too :D

I've been looking at all the links but can't find anywhere where it says how long it can record. Some say they can hold a 32gb memory card but how much time is that?

Our helmet hero does about an hour - we pick where we think the prettiest bit of the ride is going to be and put it on to include that bit. I don't know if the newer ones manage longer.

I have a Veho Muvi (£50), here is a XC video if interested. It is very small and discrete.
The only problem i have is the buttons are fiddly to start recording if you are already on board horse with camera on helmet

PS please excuse my random out load stride counting....
