I have been thinking of getting one of the new(ish) vented riding hats becuase my head gets very hot and sweaty when riding.

Does anyone have one? Do they really work?

I have a troxel for that exact reason and it has been a god send! I got one with removable lining so I can keep it rinsed and fresh on my hair.

I had a troxel and it was fabulous but I ride along bridlepaths with lots of low branches and found they went in the holes and got caught, a couple of times I nearly got dragged off the horse.

I now have a champion ventair which is very comfortable but think it actually heats my head up! The inside smells like a dead badger most of the time - yuk.

Of the two I preferred the Troxel as kept my head really cool. I have tested both types by crashing off on my head, both times the hats were written off but my head was OK!

I have a Just Togs JTE series hat. I was very surprised as to how light and comfortable it is and how much less my head sweats. I have very long hair and pretty much had to wash my hair daily after riding- now I can skip a few days!

I've got a Champion ventair & tbh don't notice much difference from a normal hat. I've got waist length hair & have to wash it every day - can get away with an extra day if I haven't ridden.

Troxel hats are fantastic for this reason. Really stops 'sweaty head' syndrome. Also have a champion ventair for good, but def get warmer in it (though prpb still better than a standard hat with no ventilation at all).

I've got a Ventair skull and it's made a huge difference. I bought my first Ventair hat as a last resort- I was getting splitting headaches every time I rode even if it was just for 10 minutes. I bought the peaked Ventair on the off chance it might work, if it didn't I would have to quit riding as I just couldn't stand the headaches- they weren't touched by any amount of painkillers. That was 3 years ago, headaches cured!!

In September last year I had to replace the peaked Ventair as I fell on my head out XC. Bought the skull Ventair and it's just as fab as the peaked version

I was using the JTE vented which was fairly good but after falling off I replaced it with a harry hall vented (black with wide grey stripe) i cant remember the exact model but the description will help.
i couldn't believe how light it is and its certainly cooler than the JTE.
i show jump in a champion ventair its much heavier but good for ventilation.

how did we ever cope before with older velvet types ??

I have a Troxel, it's amazing at keeping your head cool, and hair fresh. The only trouble is with the large vents and net lining, if it's chucking it down mid hack, you get soggy patches. Not good if you have very thick, curly hair that goes frizzy at the slightest sniff of rain!!!

I have a JTE and have been thinking of looking for something else, as in the summer or after a lesson my hair is just ringing wet when I get off, and I really don't think it's that good at all.

I have a dublin onyx and I would never go back to a normal hat now. I can ride for 4+ hours and not get helmet hair, a headache or one of those attractive lines across your forehead.
