Hi Everyone!!! Longtime no chat!!!! Happy New Year from Cudo, Chad and myself.

I am hopping in to invite anyone who is interested to come watch out live Q&A with Dr. Barry Miller from the Virginia Tech Helmet Safety Lab. They are currently about half way through a 2 year study on creating a rating system to help define the safest helmets with a 5 star Rating system so that all riders can know looking at a helmet, exactly how well it fares in safety testing.

Obviously this is in the USA, but it is pretty interesting stuff.

We are having the live chat on Zoom this Thursday night, 1/6/22 at 7pm Eastern Time, which would be 12am in the UK. BUT we will be posting a link to the recording if it's just too late for you all.

You can see a video here of some of what the Virginia Tech Study Folks are up to now.

Also if you have questions you would like asked, email them to mipssaves@gmail.com and I will make sure that they get asked.

The Zoom info is here:

Meeting ID: 983 874 1633
Passcode: 819817

I hope this finds you all well. This should be a cool informative meeting and I would love if you all wanted to attend.

Thanks Em. I needed to replace my helmet recently so I bought the same as last time but with mips added. I bought it online and it hasn't arrived yet so I can't review it but I know you are an advocate of mips.

That's so great ! Which helmet did you get?

Em
The uvexx exxential. It arrived today. It's very comfortable :) I give my horse a break for December and January so won't be riding. I am planning to do a few lessons on a hired horse though so I'll get to see how it feels then.

Bit late for me but really interested to see link afterwards.

Also really pleased to see you back - was worried there was bad news but Cudo is back on track?

Fabulous helmet!!!

Remember that it's got a depth adjustment feature that no other MIPS helmet has. Though if you had the non-Mips before you likely know that.

@Nicnaclaus - Not so much "bad news" as I had a real big mental issue with some of the commentary from Social Media and such after our one show in June.

Now this next part will like garner some raised eyebrows but essentially I went into a pretty significant depression, didn't ride much if at all and did no more shows last year.

Cudo is perfectly fine, though a bit pudgy. It's winter here and while I want to ride again, we've got a frozen ring and impending snowstorms. I may ride here and there but my future depends on me and what I want to do. And that's fine.

My friend Kelsey is training Chad up for me and doing a great job getting him closer to being sold.

I am fine as a person but my longstanding self doubt took a wallop. So this is how you heal... you find the space to choose to do things one step at a time. We're both healthy physically, but I don't know what happens next. I got a puppy in August and chose to spend my afternoons each day raising her right instead of riding. And it was lovely. I did ride a friend's horse at some paperchases and such, but nothing consistent.

Hi Bunnydog, it's really lovely to hear from you, I was only wondering the other day how you and the lovely Cudo are getting along! So I'm really, really sorry you've been through such a tough patch. I hope you feel better in yourself soon, and that you and Cudo get back into your training and competing routine, I love hearing of your adventures and watching the great videos. You've done so well!

Best wishes for 2022, and look forward to hearing about your future adventures - "Go Team Bunny Dog"!! ?

I'm sorry things have been difficult, it makes sense to take your time getting back in to things. Your health is the most important thing. It's good you don't have to worry about Chad as well. When the weather improves and you are ready to ride again, be sure to take things slowly x

Do you know how the I've fits in terms of suiting certain size heads? I completely appreciate it needs to be fitted professionally but I've been wanting to replace my Charles Owen Ayrbrush with a Uvexx (or another similiar lightweight option) but I don't think there's anywhere near me that stocks Uvexx. It would be a long drive to discover it doesn't suit my head shape at all :D

Certainly the Uvex hat I had, had an adjustment "dial" at the back to let you adjust the hat to your head size and shape. I had tried so many different hats, but the Uvex hat was quite a game changer, it was so comfortable.

It has a dial at the back so you can adjust it to make it bigger or smaller. You can also adjust the height so it fits on your head correctly. I have a round head and it suits me.

I got it on the horze website because my local shops don't stock it either. There are 4 sizes. If you know what your usual size is in cm you will find the right uvex size. Mine is xxs- small, that fits head sizes 52cm -55cm.

It also has a lot of vents and the liner is removable and washable.

The problem we have in the UK is that the standards for competition hats were essentially devised by the manufacturers ,so naturally ,their hats pass. Anyone trying to design a better hat is faced with an almost impossible task because of the vested interests . This incidentally ,and whilst I agree, is not my opinion . It is the opinion expressed to me by the chief designer of a world renowned hat manufacturer. (sorry , cant name but begins with a P) He informed me that they could make a better safer hat but it couldnt pass the "tests" Modern hats are designed to reduce injury from falling onto hard cornered objects ,stones kerbs, bricks etc. They are almost useless in absorbing the energy of deceleration during a head on impact into the ground. The spinal column takes the brunt of this and the various nerves exiting from it over the first few vertebrae can be crushed. The old hats with a nylon strap, cradle were far superior in this respect but needed alot of knowledge to fit correctly.
