I don't know if any one you are single malt whiskey drinkers or know much about it, but if you do, I need your help!!

Need to get a REALLY nice bottle, TODAY(!), for someone's leaving present. He knows his whiskey and he knows what's good, but I don't lol!

I need to be able to buy it today, so suggestions of places to get it from would be fab, I can google if they're near me. Looking to spend around £60.

Long shot, I know, but thank you if you can help :)

I quite like Talisker, and it seems to be pretty popular with most of the guys I know who drink whisky.

I guess it depends on what sort he likes - peaty or not so much. Best bet is probably to find a slightly more specialist shop than your average off-lisence, and ask for their advice on the more pricey bottles. A Talisker is about £40.

Hi ya married to a Scotsman who insists on taking me to the Scottish Malt Whiskey Society whenever we visit his family in Edinburgh! Have to say I am converted.

Depends on what area your colleague like his whiskey from as the different distilleries have totally differing flavours. However a good all round choice is a Highland Park Single Malt either the 12 or even better the 18 year old.

I have no idea of stockists in your area but if you find a proper wine and spirit shop google is your friend so search on "unfiltered Cask Whisky" any proper wine and Spirit shop staff will be happy to talk you through it.

OH is suggesting the following if you can not find a specialist shop;

Talisker
Laphroaig
Bowmore
Dalwhinnie

All of the above are on average between £30 and £40 a bottle unless the shop stocks an older one which will be more expensive and will be sold in the normal High Street wine merchants again they should advise. You can always buy an really nice heavy cristal whisky galss with the excess money.

Good luck

My OH is a whisky drinker and knows his stuff. I don't know anything about what is good etc but I know he likes Talisker, Laphroaig and Glenmorangie. Probably a whole lot more but they are the only ones I can think of right now.

Omg you people are AMAZING!! :D He likes a bit of everything tbh, he's a serious whiskey drinker but appreciates the different tastes and has visited lots of distillerys which is why we want to get him something good :)

Ah I've found my local bookers has the Highland Park one but only twelve year old, tis only about £30 too so wasn't sure if it was good. Looks like the same names are getting mentioned so I may just have to go and hunt.

Anyone in my area (Somerset) that could suggest a good place to go in either Yeovil or Taunton?

Whisky is personal preference - just like wine or beer. Suggest as you don't know his preference, that you buy something unusual from a smaller distillery rather than the well known names - it would at least be something special for him to try. Just make sure it is a single malt and not blended. Minatures are naff...

Laphroaig is very peaty and a bit of an aquired taste. Highland Park is beautifully smooth and is definately my malt of choice :) Glenmorangie is also a very popular choice. Tbh unless you know he is a fan of the peaty end of the scale I would steer clear, you either love them or hate them!

Would agree with this....the peaty ones are a matter of taste OH loves them to me they taste like TCP (sorry all Islay Malt lovers).

Oddbins is a good suggestion they generally have very good knowleable staff

He does like the peaty stuff, he made the comment about TCP last night lol!! I know he appreciates both ends of the scale so not too worried about acquired taste because I know he likes them :)

Right, I am now armed with a list of good whiskeys, you are all amazing and thank you SOOOOOO much for your help!

I'll let you know what I've found when I get back :D xx

p.s. the tumbler idea is great and I know just where I can get one, so I'll go with that idea if I don't spend the budget

I have returned successful! In the end I got a bottle of Glenfidditch 18 year old. It was a toss up between that and Highland Park 12 year old and a couple of whisky drinking friends said to go with the 18 one. I've also bought him a pair of darlington crystal tumblers, simple and very heavy bases lol.

Thanks for all your help, it was VERY much appreciated :)

Hope this isn't too late - but you typed whiskEy (i.e. Irish as opposed to Scottish, which is Whisky) - which is it you want?

Bushmills is good if you want Irish, or any of the Scottish as suggested by my fellow tipplers!

If he likes them smooth and creamy then Highland Park or Dalwhinnie are both lovely. Generally speaking the older and more mature the better.
If it's something peaty then go for an island one like Talisker or Bowmore (very smoky) or Laphroaig.
Personally - mine's a g&t!
