I have had my 2 year old for 6 months and when i got him i handled him and got to the point where i could touch his sheath and between his legs etc. He was then gelded in feb and ever lately he won't let me inbetween his back legs and starts kicking and he has now developed sweetitch so has to have a rug on and i have now got to the point where i can't get his leg straps on as he just goes mad and starts kicking and really panicking. I was wondering whether you think this is him being nervous after being gelded as the vet didn't give him much sedation and he was fully awake for his second ball getting removed lol.
Any advice how to get over this?

Can't you convert leg straps to a fillet string for the time being? Then just touch his hind legs on the outside and gradually gain his confidence again. I have a horse who does not like leg straps.

I have had two young horses who could not bear to have a bridle pulled over their ears - so I started by putting it on in pieces. One of them now puts her head right down for me and is never a problem, the other recently backed is slowly starting to respond to quiet treatment.

I would not worry, just take your time.

this may sound a bit mad, but i recently bought a pretty unhandled yearling, and to get him used to being touched all round by his sheath, i bought a feather duster with an extendable handle, so that i could touch him all round where he didn't really like it, but maintain a safe distance from flying backlegs! it worked, he got used to it, and then i progressed to my hand. The key with him was not to stop with the feather duster until he'd stopped kicking, he soon learnt that when he kicked, it didn't stop, but when he was good, the nasty feathery thing went away! Don't think I'd have been so keen to adopt this tactic if i'd been within booting range!!
He was gelded last week, and has since let me 'feel' all round his sheath with the feather duster. Have yet to try the hand again, but will soon...
