Hello,

I am new to this.

But I need some help with my polo mare who is out on loan but I am having back to sell on.

I bought her aged 6 when I was 13 (well my parents did) and played beginner polo on her, she was always slightly skitty and I put this down to age and not being on the right feed. We had everything checked and she settled in and I have grown up loving her, she is amazing and lovely we can have a flat out gallop on the forest in a snaffle and stop immediately. I have done all pony club on her, hunted her EVERYTHING!!
I have taken beginners out hacking on her off the lead and she never put a foot wrong....

Over the many years (she is now 12) she improved but we have the following problems:

Bronks (its not rearing or bucking but more of a leap that can unseat the best rider) very occasionally and for no reason.

Kicks if you touch her back legs and tail area

Sometimes appears cold backed

Is extremely ticklish

Mareish and grumpy in the field

Kicks me if I touch her belly

Occasionally goes mental when I do the girth up?

Becomes very nasty when in the trailer/lorry: biting her best friend, bucking, rubbing her tail raw, biting me whilst i tie her up.

She also bites when I do her rug.

Now the majority of the time, she is a beginners horse, when polo fit she is an angel and plods along, never spooks etc etc. But then we have these bad days where she appears cold backed and also she is just plain grumpy at times? The kicking when doing her back legs is also an issue as you never know what mood she will be in?

She also comes into season a LOT more than any of my other mares, and is a right pain when in season.

She has no back issues, teeth, she has a specially fitted saddle, her bit is fine, her rugs fit very well and are clean. The lorry is lovely and safe. She is genuinely either a complete softy or an absolute menace.

Also on the days she is mareish I cannot catch her easily.

ANY ADVICE is welcome.

I have read about having a marble inserted in her?
Also someone mentioned using a supplement to regulate her and stop her being in season.... REGUMATE?

Also they said buying the pig version is the same but much cheaper (they have top event horses).

Look forward to your advice

Many Thanks

PS: she is a 15.1hh tb x argentine mare

She sounds like she has the human version of PMT. I have a mare and apart from being a bit flirty when in season, shes good all the time. She has NAF Oestress all year round as when I didnt feed it, she came into season big style in the February and had a bucking fit and threw me off in the school. Kept her on the stuff all year round since then.

Your mare sounds more fiercely in tune with her hormones. I would speak to your vet. They can prescribe the drug Regumate which I believe is like putting her on the pill so she doesnt have seasons. Effectively I think it makes their body think they are pregnant, bit like how the pill works for us. You vet will confirm this and whether its suitable. The marble I think is similar but not a drug. Probably a bit like the human version of the coil.

Hope this helps and good luck!
