hello guys...

i posted last week that my mare has started to get v v excited on the gallops and does lots of squeeling and bucking etc. she is an ex flat racer and so no doubt knows what gallops are for..

anyway - went up there last night and as we set into canter she just bucked and bucked so excited. it got quite high and after about 5 in a row i brought her back to walk. half of me thought - kick her on and get these bucks out of her, and half of me got slightly frightened, as they were maaahoooosive!!!!

so - what to do?

i took her into the open grass field after that and cantered her on both reins and no bucking - so think it's def associated with the gallops which links with the race horse in her, and i even let her go fast on the grass and still no hint of a buck.

What should i have done - kick her on and hope to stay on? or was i right to pull her up?

answers on a post card!!!

Bxxx

One possibility is to pull her back every time she bucks, and then send her on again, and if she bucks pull her back, and then send her on again.

Or frankly I might just stick off the gallops for a bit!

We have loads of horses that come to us very gallop wise. Simple answer is keep off the gallops. They may feel fresh, but they are infact soured. Keep her on the grass and her attitude will improve greatly, you will find sometime in the future she will have forgotten all about the gallops, and will be fine on them.

Hello - thanks for the advice.. and as one who is much wiser when it comes to ex racers i very much value your opinion. i will do just that, and keep faster work to grass... is a shame as the gallops form part of most of our rides, however, it's not worth it for her. she is fit enough and doesn't need fast work at the mo. we have enough open spaces to go faster work, and she's not like this any where else.!!!!

Thanks again.

I agree...keep off the gallops for a bit...no point fighting. I have just (this morning) learnt that the hard way with my horse, asking him to do something that he has issues with and getting bronked off for my efforts! Stick to what you are both happy with...as I will now too!
