I'm in desperate need of some advice.

Bud is lame
frown.gif
showed on thurs eve, was only very slight in trot so gave him fri off as no heat or swelling thought he may have pulled something. On saturday he was still slightly lame so thought best to get him checked out - luckily managed to take him into vet clinic and see top vet there.
After several nerve blocks and him trying to attack me on the lunge rearing at me (quite scary no idea why?) he was diagnosed with a sprained fetlock near fore.
We were sent away with very strong anti-inflamataries and vet said he had no idea how long it would take to come right 1,2,3,4 weeks.
Here's the tough bit - i have entered Chatsworth its this saturday. Vet said he would re-assess Bud on Thurs and can decided then whether to run or not..... but on schedule it says withdrawals by tuesday. i just don't know what to do - do i wait till thurs risk losing all my entry fees (can't really afford to) and would it be alot to ask as he's still not level this morning, or are these things very minor and he will be fine as i've dreamt at running at chatsworth for so long...... or should i withdraw today and just be depressed for rest of week....

Help - very upset and confused.

I doubt very much you'll get your entry fee back unfortunately, whenever you withdraw.

I wouldnt run, he's a lovely young horse and you dont want to do more damage now especially after you've just spent a long time getting him right.

Ring them up Tuesday and be really nice and say you can produce a vets cert if necessary, you should get most of your money back if it's before withdrawel date I think. Even if he is ok on Thurs it's very quick, and he'll still have anti-inflammatories in his system which isn't allowed, and could mask something else he may pick up at the event. Very bad luck, but best to have him fixed and the rest of the season, than just the one run at Chatsworth.....

I agree with Boss - its just not worth it for one event. Better to have a completely sound horse for rest of the season.

(((hugs)))

Oh E I am so sorry to hear this.

Personally I would ring Chatsworth and withdraw! hes too precious to risk. Hes still got years ahead of him.

Bertie did something similar years ago and it took a while to come right, but once right i never ever flaired up again. Bear in mind, Berts was 19 and not as fit as Bud.

Give him the time, the rain is falling now anyway, so hopefully you will get better ground later in the summer

I think withdraw as any injury that near to the time will still be slightly weak and liable to make him feel it on this ground. Even with the rain it is still going to be hard.
I know how you feel, we prepared Jonty last year all winter for one event and did a HT the month before just to remind her about jumping bigger fences, but she broke down and we have had to wait a whole year to start again. (dare I say after her recent accidents she was ridden or the first time again yesterday

Your horse sounds too good to risk to be honest, by all means see how he is the day before but anything that makes a horse actually lame and the vet won't give a time scale usually means a few weeks' off at th very least in my experience.

Yes you are right, i have spent so long getting him right think thats why so upset about it all but so true don't want to damage him will ring entries secretary and see what i can get back with a vet certificate.

I agree with the others. Its not worth the risk for one event no matter how much you want to compete....

My old mare had the same thing and it took a while to come right, she was only very slightly lame but it seemed to take forever.... in fact it was only around 3/4 weeks, but that was on complete box rest and anti-inflamitaries etc...

Hope you get your fees back. Good luck!

fighting back tears, silly getting upset about it think it's as i only have the one horse and spent so much time on the devil and yes he is too precious.
just spoke to my trainer and she said think of bigger picture your aiming for 1 star, there's Chatsworth next year and other nice events later this year it's not worth risking it - so will withdraw

i have my new arena to ride on hopefully by end of this week so that will be good for him - think will give him some time off not sure whether to box rest him or not???

Sorry to hear that Bud is not right

I would withdraw. I know how frustrating it is to miss what you have been working towards but better that than another long layoff should he worsen this injury.

Wise decision I think.
Resting depends vey much on how he copes, we tend to turn ours out with support bandages or boots on, as standing in stresses them more.
Things like this injury have responded very well to turn out in a bioflow boot, can you borrow/buy one? (the magnets speed up the blood flow to the area and help healing)

i don't really want to leave him in, he much prefers being out and as long as he can see the two boys he's fairly sensible.
never used bandages as supports or used bioflow boots etc. not sure i know anyone with any either....
would a normal set of brushing boots give him some support? just put them on for turn out maybe?? will rest him rest of week and vet coming thurs so he will be able to let me know best plan i hope.
entered Cleobury already, thats 4 weeks away so lets hope it will be ok for then!!!
thanks for your help it really does make a difference being on here!

Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear Buds lame, Mouse has done exactly the same, she is back in walk work now and is being re-checked this week, i was also gutted as i had alot planned for us and i was looking forward to the BE season, I'm hoping to do a little at the end of season as long as the ground is not to bad, Mouse has been on box-rest since beginning of March, but because she is very chilled the vet has allowed us to turn her out in a very very small paddock, she is waring pro choice boots out during the day, her Bioflow boots on at night and the vet told me to work her in bandages,
I do hope he makes a speedy recovery

im sorry to hear hes lame hun

I definately wouldnt be running him on this ground especially now hes had time off for being lame, you could make it worse even if the vet does say hes sound and able to go. It could just flare up again due to the hard ground, i really wouldnt risk it. For the sake of entry fees or your horse, id rather loose the entry fees xx

it is so upsetting i have withdrawn and i don't get any money back really disappointed and sad. and dad just rang and happen to mention he's doing handstands in the field bronking about not sure thats doing him any good think i need to cut his feed down as i am not riding him!
vet coming later this week so will see what his advise is for near future.
thank you for your response it really does help xx
