I feed the dogs raw, they get Nutriment for convenience and because they look great on it. Because it's so soft and mushy I like to give them bones every so often to keep their teeth in good nick. I got some beef ribs from the butchers at the weekend and gave them to Ruby and Dougal. Last night Ruby came in from the garden clawing at her mouth so I had a look and saw a bit of bone dug into her gum where it meets her teeth at the back.
Tried to get my hand in but she was being a bit funny. Gave her a strip of beef jerky to try and 'dislodge' it whilst eating and that seemed to do the trick as she was no longer clawing at her mouth. I'll have another look tonight and keep a close eye on it as I don't want her getting an abscess/ infection. Anyway my question is how do I stop this happening again? I want to keep their teeth in good condition and I thought bones that weren't the weight bearing bones of animals were okay? I'm worried that next time I give her one it'll be a shard of bone that ends up in her stomach and kills her!
Thanks
