Any one else had any trouble with a alpaca A few months ago myself and friend were riding down the village as we do often past the field of about ten alpacas and this one came running up to the gate and started spitting making this really horride nosie the horses were going mad ended with my wrist been stapped up for a months as horse went nuts it runs right down the fence nxt to you really quite scary as horse aint used to it but its strange how its just on out of about ten that does this. We were told it had gone so weht that way this morning on my mums horses whos normali not fazed by anything but it s back and did the same thing he was good but was scared of it so on the way bk got a friend to go to stand nxt to field ready for when i can back. She said that as soon as it heared the horse it shot across the field spitting. Its not just me whos that this problem a few ppl have im worried someone is going to get really hurt what would you do? Its only way out of the village past the field too grr

Having bred alpacas for years I've never yet met a fierce one!
Even when provoked such as shearing the worst they did was spit, and we only ever got kicked once. This is probably the only male in the field hence it's behaviour.
They don't bite etc to I suggest you go past on your bike and see if it comes over, then apply a water pistol fair and squarely at it. Or open an umbrella/ use a squeaky toy etc, and wave your arms at it.
I can't imagine it will do anything other than leg it in the opposite direction!!
Go and see the owner if it flies at the horses, and ask if you can go in the field on a sensible one and chase it when it does it, ours were grazed with our horses and were definitely the bottom of the pack, so much so that one day I witnessed our border collie chasing the alpacas, who were chasing the goats, who were behind the horses etc..
Stand up to it and it will run away is my advice..

Interesing we have the same problems with a herd of lamas, they fly to the gate hising and spitting for England. Both my mares hate them, nearly lost my daughter and mare when I driver refused to slow down/ stop when I asked him to when the horses were having a spaz. You should have seen his face when he realised that standing up in your strirups, hand firmly up in the air shouting stop , really ment he should stop or have a 16.3 horse on your bonnet, his passangers face was a picture, and she had a real go at him as well.
Anyway, pointless story but I dont have a clue what to do about it, although the owner of the lamas has been approached by horse owners with the same problem as me but they are still in the same field next to a road, I just dont hack that way any more.

We have loads of alpacas and llamas in our locality, and haven't had a problem with them at all! They take no notice when the horses hack by and the horses aren' that bothered by them when they have seen them a few times!

I agree with henryhorn, it is prob a male, in a herd of females hence alpha behaviour trying to be protective (coz secretly hes going holy **** what is that!) so Id take a water pistol or something you can use to deter it from on your horse, from a distance away!
They are cute, but awefully funny! :-)
If its a real problem go talk to the owner and see what can be done about it!?

Is it possible to go to the field when you're not in a rush and spend time getting your horse used to them? Is there a safe side of the field you could use without fear of getting run over? I'd just ride or lead the horse there, and stand with your horse for however long it took for your horse to calm down. Do this a few times and should realise even if the stupid thing does run at you spitting its not going to do any more, and the alpaca may even get bored anyway! :-)
