Help! Amigo L/W washing question.

I have just washed my lightweight amigo turnout rug - have I just 'unwaterproofed' it?

Didn't even consider that I might have done because of the material, but I washed it in detergent and now I'm worrying!

Also, in future, there is a specific horseware product, (somewhere on their website) that you can use in your machine when you wash it to clean and proof

Yes you have stripped it of waterproofness. You need to thoroughly clean out the wash powder dispenser of your washing machine, wash it in Nikwax RugWash and then re-proof it with Nikwax Re-Proofer. If you dont do this then traces of the detergent may react with the Nikwax and the re-proofer may not work. I wash rugs as a business, by the time you have done the necessarys you could have had it done for the same money professionaly. Never mind, at least you will know for the future.
 
What temperature did you wash it at? I wash all my Amigos, Rhinos and Rambos in my industrial washing machine at home, at least twice a year and they're all still very waterproof. Trick is to keep the temp low and not to use a biological powder. I wash mine at 20 degrees and run them through an extra rinse cycle.
 
Izzwizz - really didn't think beforehand! Had washed stable fleeces and they had come up lovely and got a bit carried away I think! Will know for next time, hopefully can salvage it though. He is now in his h/w rug as he has been clipped so have got plenty of time to try to reproof.

Spyda - washed it at 40c and used LOTS of biological powder to get it really clean!
 
Good luck with salavaging it anyway. Otherwise you will just have to use on non-rainy days. At least they are cheap enough to replace, £29.50 when I bought one not so long ago. You will have a bit of a clue if you go through the above process, when they are waterproof rugs usually have a "crispy" feel to them.

On another note, just watch when using detergents to wash fleeces, the powder can irriate some horses skin, especially the itchy scratchy ones. Use NuuMed wash (available from saddlerys) or Nikwax Rugwash. The NuuMed is very gentle and designed for horses.
