My 2 year old got kicked on saturday, it wasn't a bad kick so hosed for 5 minutes and put dermagel on the cut. The next morning her leg has swollen which i thought might happen because she is in at night, to cut a long story short have been hosing twice a day and re applying the gel and the leg did go down a tiny bit but is still quite swollen. Do i call the vet out? or carry on hosing and adding cream would really appreciate some help and advice.

I think that it would be best to ring your vet and ask for his/her advice and if they want to visit.

Whereabouts is the kick i.e. on the bone, fleshy part or near a joint? Also is there heat in the leg/near the wound site and is the swelling/heat travelling to other parts of the leg?

I know with my TB that if he has any kind of kick injury causing the skin to break, he generally ends up getting an infection in the site requiring anti-biotics even though I keep the site clean and cold hose to reduce swelling. If the kick is any where near/on a joint I always get a vet as an infected joint needs to be treated early.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice i will ring him tommorrow, the cut is on the bottom of the cannon bone near the long pastern on the front of her leg. at first there was a lot of heat but that now seems to have gone.
