my 20 year old throuabred , difficult to keep weight on , windsucks and prone to colic , had done really well through summer gained weight well , however last night he got brought in and was really tucked up , thought he got a chill was rugged up out in field but only a lightweight , bright and eating well , this am was still very tucked up , eaten well last night , passed droppings and eaten well this am , just worried on how tucked up he is , any ideas greatly appreciated !! xx

where i am it was cold and damp last night, my daughters 17ys old mare was in a medium weight as she really feels the cold. a rain sheet/lightweight does nothing to keep them warm, in fact it stops them fluffing their coats up so they cannot use what nature gave them to try and keep themselves warm.

i would take him for a brisk 10 min walk to get his circulation going, put a warm rug on him and then give a warm sloppy feed and a large pile of hay, keep a close eye for colic but get some fuel (food) into him. if he seems ok the take him for another walk after an hour or so, put at least a medium weight rug on at night when the weather changes so fast.

thanks for your advice yes been scoped for ulcers no sign of ulcers , is kept on a gastric supplement due to being prone to colic and weight issues

He is absolutely fine no longer tucked up thankfully hopefully was just a one off , eaten well today and no colic however I am worried as due for worming again soon and always colics post wormer have tried giving him bute no help

Presumably you've talked to the vets about this as they may be able to give you something to help treat the colic before it really gets going. The other thing is to look at the wormer, maybe worth doing a 5 day panacur rather than a one dose thing to try and be more gently on his stomach.

The other thing to think about is maybe look at hay or haylage he is on - my sister's tb had about 6 months where he had spasmodic colic every week or two. We changed hay supplier as our usual ran out and he stopped colicking. The hay we had been using smelled nice, no-one else had any bother, looked good etc but obviously just didn't agree with him.
