Hi prop should of posted this in vets but always seems to be more knowlagable horsey people in this lounge...here goes, daughter was schooling her pony last thurs and had a couple of canter poles out, after riding for about 20mins so defo warmed in,cantered over the poles and all of a sudden pony pulled up lame as in hopping lame:eek: daughter dismounted and took her back to the stable, after untacking we took her to cold hose and she was almost dragging her toe she was that lame, checked foot,no swelling no heat nothing,so called vet out,vet couldnt find anything obvious so intravenus pain killer for the night and she came back friday lunch time, still nothing obvious, no swelling nothing so vet has agrred to come out monday morn and is prob going to nerve block or x-ray,still no improvement today (sat) pony very bright but wont weight bear on that leg,she hasnt been allowed out of her stable as vet didnt want her moved as so lame.....any ideas anybody, keep thinking the worst, and vet was even talking about poss fracture as no swelling or heat:eek:

My first thought was fracture, but how? Did she canter over the poles or land/stumble over them? Very strange indeed! Hope its good news x

These things are so complicated could be all manner of things! Would be definately asking for x-rays but if it won't weightbear I would be dubious about waiting until Monday! - fingers crossed for Monday.

Friends horse had fractured pedal bone, did it in field! Good news is horse made full recovery ! Hard but all u can do is follow vets advice and wait for xray, maybe something v simple fingers crossed

vet hoof tested so no abcess,no stumble over poles and they were plastic poles not wood,i would say bute has had a slight effect as i think she is moving slightly better today but its hard to say as shes in her stable, and vet has mentioned either check ligament(but there is no swelling) or poss looking further up maybe stifle??

Hi Lauren she did a good examination ie;prod, poked and felt everywhere and looked to see if everything was level but im not sure how they would examin the pelvis??

The vet seems to have been unable to find which area the problem is in, if check ligament I would expect heat and swelling as I would in the stifle with such an acute onset of lameness.
An abscess is a possibility if high up in the foot may not have reacted to testers and painkillers will have little affect on the pain or as suggested pedal bone fracture.

I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago. I had schooled my loan horse on the flat, she'd gone well, and I popped over a small fence in the arena to finish session. She pulled up on 3 legs< I was beside my self and thought she had broken a bone such was the severity of lameness. She had in fact pulled the check ligament in her off hind, and had to be massaged daily and on box rest for a month. She didn't make a full recovery to the work she was doing previously but she was in her late teens and this is at least 15 yrs ago, hopefully treatment has move on. Best of luck with yours

Only time anything like this has happened to us, similar symptoms, turned out to be her stifle although no obvious signs of where the injury was. She ended up at Leahirst for an operation.

I would suspect stifle too- it happened a pony of mine years ago, cantering in a field and suddenly going on 3 legs and would not bear weight. However after a day he started standing on it again but still sore, vet said he displaced/dislocated his stifle joint and it popped back in itself again.
Hope you find out what it is soon and get it fixed, good luck.

Thanks everyone for your replies.....will let u all know tomorrow if we get any answers after vet visit, fingers crossed...:(

I had a big (ID) horse that had been hunting. He returned home fine but the next day was three legged lame at the trot. He was fine at the walk but crippled at he trot.
No one could find out where he was lame, nerve blocks made no difference and there was no swelling or heat anywhere.
Using Applied Kinnesiology to read for a weakness and Forradic machines could not make him say 'OW"
Conclusion was that it was something high inside his groin area.
He had about 6 weeks in a loose barn, sound at a walk, lame at trot, if you could get him to trot as he would rather canter. More barn rest and one day he would seem sound and the next crippled. Gave up on him and chucked him out in the field for the summer and he came up sound in the August and was never lame from whatever it was, again in his life.

One of those mysteries of life! Time usually sorts things out.
