My saddle is about 3 years old and I've always had the bog standard stainless steel headplate in. I heard about the magnesium ones and thought it sounded a good idea to get one as my saddle is so heavy I thought it would reduce the weight, be more comfy for my horse etc....
Anyway it came yesterday and when I fitted it I noticed the little holes where it screws on are smaller than on the normal plates but it squeezed on ok but when I put it into place it didn't slot into the space beneath the pommel neatly like the usual ones did. Then when I came to take it out and put the old one back in its stuck and won't come out! AARRGH!
Anyway I spoke to First Thought this morning and they said it doesn't matter if its not a totally snug fit into the pommel but I'm still paranoid about it moving slightly - does anyone have the new magnesium plate and if so does it fit snuggly or do you have a small gap above it - I'm only talking a few millimetres here - but definitely not into the headplate shaped space in the pommel if you know what I mean. I also asked FT if they had any suggestions how to get the plate back out and they couldn't really give me any advice other than take it to a saddler which I obviously will if I ever need to change it again but how easily do yours go in and out? I wonder if the design has changed slightly and thats why mine is causing so much bother!
Please someone put my mind at rest.
