We've just bought a 2nd hand Discovery 3 for towing. It came with a detachable tow bar, which wasn't attached at the time. We tried to fit it tonight but couldn't.

It looks like it's not going far enough into the socket for the locking pin to reach the hole. The little silver pin at the front doesn't seem to want to move although it looks like it should be pushed in:confused:

I'm supposed to be going to a hunter trial on Sunday. I've already missed 3 this autumn due to various issues and I realy don't want to miss another.

Is there anybody out there who's got one and can give me any advice please?

I would make sure its clean and free of rust and lubricate it well with WD40 make sure the locking pins move freely and its fully home and locked in before you hitch up the trailer..
hope that helps....

It's well lubricated. OH plastered it in WD40. The big pin at the back moves easily but the little pin at the front doesn't want to budge. We weren't sure it was definitely supposed to move so didn't want to give it a whack to loosen it but maybe we should? I think as it's not moving, it's stopping the whole thing going into the socket far enough for it to lock?

This won't help much if at all but I've got one and a chap slotted it in very easily and I think he used the little red key it came with. However, what I'd do (as I've had to do when I couldn't operate the 3rd row of seats, couldn't get the spare tyre off, the list goes on....) is pop into your local dealer and ask then to show you how to do it, or check it out for you before the weekend! I could have a closer look tomorrow, take mine off (it stays on permanently) and take pics if that helps?

Have a look on YouTube, there might be some sad person who has posted on there!! If not a trip to your local dealer and ask how is a really easy option. Good luck!

try this.Seems as though collors must be pulled up then give it a good whack to get on,use something softer than the tow bar,bit of wood or a soft mallet.

is it getting the thing on the vechicle??? or hitching trailer on it ??

if so................http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic46552.html

Says about removing a red plug is that out???

On looking on various forums,it does seem that they are rather easy to nick,so take it off when not using it.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah red plug is out, lock is unlocked an handle pulled out and turned. Have read a few things about it and it looks like we're doing everything right but just can't get it in far enough for the locking mechanism to engage. Think it's a case of needing to give it a good whack but a bit nervous to as not 100% certain that's what's needed or that we're not going to damage it by doing so!

It's getting the thing on the vehicle rather than hitching it up to the trailer.

Thanks Angelbones, but wouldn't recommend taking it off if it's not been off for a while. From what I've read, that could cause more trouble that it's worth. Would hate for you to be in a pickle as well!
