JUST NEED A BIT OF ENCOURAGEMENT AFTER HAVING A V BAD FALL SMASHING MY FEMUR I NOW HAVE A DYNAMIC HIP SCREW IN IT AND JUST WONDERED IF ANY BODY ELSE IS RIDING WITH ONE HAVE SEARCHED INTERNET AND COULDNT FIND ANY INSPIRATION AS I AM VERY NERVOUS EACH TIME I GET ON MY HORSE EVEN NOW IT HAS BEEN 5 YEARS SINCE THE OP MUST AD MY HORSE IS BRILL SO NOT WORIED ABOUT HIM BUT WANT TO GET BACK TO THE CONFIDENCE I HAD BEFORE THE ACCIDENT ANY INSPIRATION REALLY APPRECIATED THANKYOU

Sounds pretty much what I had in October last year. Basically smashed ball off top of femur and googling the pictures look pretty much like what I have in!

So I am 5 months post op had loads of physio, fitness work etc and now back riding, jumping and hopeful will continue BE eventing in next few months.

I have a website (link below) look back in my blogs, the fall was in October and it follows my progress since then which although not good enough for me seems pretty miraculous from the gloom and doom the drs promised!

I have DHS in right leg following broken femur due bad fall 7 years ago.
I was always determined to return to riding but quite cautious when I finally did get back on, 8 months later. However, I found that my confidence quickly returned. My instructor was a great help in all of this. She knows me and my horse well and I trusted her never to push us too far.

I now hack, school, jump occasionally and compete in dressage at elementary level. Anything high impact (like flying dismounts or running on hard surfaces) are best avoided. That hip joint gets a bit stiff if I sit still too long, but quickly improves with stretching or walking around. In fact, the more low-impact exercise I do (swimming, cycling, riding) the better it is. My right leg is slightly weaker than the left and one stirrup-hole shorter. Only one (list 1) dressage judge has ever commented on the difference!

IMO get on and go for it. Find a good instructor who understands the situation and will help you regain your confidence. PM me for moral support if you like.

No suffered no nerves just got staight back on and went back to schooling top level show jumpers abroad ( where it happened) .
Your issue is not with the physical side of it but the physiological only you can answer that question do you want to ride more than your scared to fall off.
Five years ago I really badly broke my leg had several ops to try and sort it out and a hip replacement during that time still riding no nerves but have taken the desision not back or have very green horses .
Good luck whatever you decide.

If it helps my husband had one a couple of years ago after breaking his femur. He got on my horse about 8 months later and promptly got bucked straight back off - best thing that could have happened as he realised how strong the repair was and that he didn't have to pussy-foot around worrying about it.

I broke my hip last September and have two titaniium screws in. My horse was also off with a splint injury so when I got back on he hadn't been ridden for six months and was v keen which made me scared. I had to move yards as I couldn't afford full livery but when it came to getting back on thenew yard was a bit to quiet so I moved back. I'm slowly doing bits with him as I know the routes and he is more settled at the old yard! I am also doing lots of walking to strengthen the leg, physio and pilates and also cycling. My horse is a welsh d so not as sharp as say a warmblood but still v strong. I just need to learn to trust him. I have self preservation issues and am nervous but Ive had him 5 years and only fallen off 4 times. 2 of those jumping as I was sat too far forward. I helped my friend at horse trials the other day and that was a big motivator as I used to love xc!
