my mum is in her 50's and suffers really bad with this in her hands and as her job is working in horses racing riding three a day she finding it very hard and painful doctors dont seem to be able to help her please help its really upsetting her
is there anything that can help or be done

I had a steroid injection in the thumb joint in my hand for arthritis which worked well for me once the initial pain wore off. Ten years later and only now am I getting a little discomfort in that joint. Perhaps worth investigating this option?

Have the Doctors actually diagnosed your Mum otherwise without one it is difficult to determine the nature and degree of her health problems.I would revisit the Doctors first and ask for more investigations before going down any particular route. If it is musculoskeletal then maybe physio or chiropracty could help.My advice is never to seek a medical diagnosis or treatment via a forum,or lay people as this approach can be very risky.

Followed perhaps by adjusting diet as I understand there are some foods that can aggravate symptoms and possibly supplements eg glucosamine. But def get proper diagnosis, hope she gets sorted out, a girl in her 20's at our yard suffers from arthritis in her hands, very sad :(

i have arthritis in my hands and ive found the best thing by far is ibuprofen tablets and ibuprofen gel rubbed into my hands a couple of times a day. my hands hurt so much they wake me up at night and its like toothache all the time unless i use the gel :)

The best thing that helped me so much was a consultation with a pain nurse ( probally not the right thing to call her) the nurse took me though pain relief options explained how all the drugs acted which combinations to use in different situations this has helped me understand how to relive the pain effectively and sort of gave me ownership of the problem I was so much happier after.

I would advise your mum to get her doctor to refer her to a rheumatologist. I have Osteoarthritis in my hands and my doctors kept telling me that there was nothing you can about it, with a shrug of their shoulders, and told to take painkillers.

The story from the rheumatologist was completely different. Whilst there is no cure, they can halt the progress and prescribe drugs to control it. I had a steroid injection (which has made a dramatic improvement on my general stiffness as well) and have to keep a diary for the next few weeks as to how I get on. I will then be re-assssed and prescribed an appropriate drug. It also turned out I have it in my knees, elbows and big toe!

Long term use of Ibuprofin is now generaly discouraged as it can be harmful.

I've had terrible arthritis mainly in my knees and elbows since I was 17 (i'm now 32). For years the doctors fobbed me off with "growing pains", or "it's because you're so tall" (i'm only 6ft so no giant) and just gave me painkillers, anti-inflammatories and at one point accupuncture. It got so bad that I could barely walk, dress or wash myself so after a tearful session at the docs she referred me to a Rheumatology specialist. It's taken a good few years (about 5) of trying lots of different meds but i'm now pretty much pain free on a bl**dy fantastic once a week self injection that has honestly changed my life.

So what i'm saying is, she needs to get her doc to refer her to a specialist. Doctors can't help with arthritis.

xx

Omega 3 fish oils help, I have Arthritis in every joint in my body and am on the point of early retirement because of it.
In my case I also have cholestrol problems and tablets for that can affect joints, so it's a case of wait and see if by not taking Simvastatins things improve.
I have given it till the end of the year and if I haven't got my pain under control I will consider giving up horses as I can't care for them as I should
Any type of Arthritis is no joke, the pain is at times unbearable, I often have to be helped down off my horse
