hi, lately my horse has not been feeling right when ridden, he is not lame just not right. he is shorter in his stride and will not canter on left rein. no heat anywhere and no previous problems. had back man out saturday and his pelvis was out near side, he gave him a 'hitch' and said he should be fine and to carry on riding him. got him in sunday and there was a bit of swelling about 4'' from his pelvis, does not seem sore to touch. i tacked him up to ride and firstly he did not want to go out of the barn when i mounted him, he was short behind in walk, but felt better in trot, then would not canter on his right rein. i did not push the matter and bought him in. so he is now worst then before, should i try physio, if so any reccomendations?? what to do??

I would recommend your vet as the first port of call - a reputable physio shouldn't work on your horse unless they have your vets permission.

Agree. Sounds like SI , and a physio probably will be able to help, but you need a proper diagnosis first.

SI - sacro-iliac joint (basically between the pelvis and the spine!)
I agree with the others re. the vet, it would be the best route to go down, and then they will be able to recommend a physio/osteo to look at your horse if they feel that would be beneficial. Until you have had a vet out I would not continue working him in case it is aggrevating the problem.
Hope he is back on form soon!!

Your ' back man' may have aggravated a ligament injury by 'hitching' the pelvis up.

It could be something completely different, I would def get a vet's opinion before trying any more alternative treatments though as your horse must be quite sore to refuse to canter. Hope you get him sorted.

no, it no higher than pelvis height and is about 6'' long and an 1'' or so wide you can feel a dip in his muscle if you press along it.

You really need to contact your Vet, your back person could have ruptured a ligament which is very common with lifting the pelvis too high. Did you know whom this back person was and his qualifications as he is not legally allowed to treat a horse without first ringing and asking permission from your Vet, he too is not allowed to diagnose what the problem is either and must treat under supervision of the Vet's guidance. Insurance policies are void if this has not been done and the Vet will not be allowed to say that he saw the horse first. It is a very grey area with back people because the law states that nobody can diagnose a problem other than a Vet, this also includes Farriers, they too are not allowed to diagnose pus in foot or treat an abcess without permission of a Vet. Hope your horse has a quick recovery.

I can't visualise the inury you describe. It sounds like an acute strain / sprain. If it was my horse I would be resting him in a stable or very small paddock and getting the vet out asap.

Nooooo back people should NEVER 'hitch' the pelvis!! This is likely to be what has caused the swelling. Get the vet or a good Chiropractor ASAP! I would only go with a Chiropractor no other 'back people'.
