Some of you have followed my rug posts, I decided to try a different brand before making a final decision on fit, it’s only for really bad wet/cold/windy weather
One is a Rambo wug 50g it’s still a little tight on the withers when his head is down but otherwise fits great, and will be great for the heavy weather it’s bought for. Fits well on shoulders.
The weatherbeeta dynamic is 0g has a lovely memory foam wither pad and isn’t too tight here, I can also add a 50g liner for the cold, (more versatile weight?) but it sits a bit low on his shoulder so when he moves you can see his shoulder through the neck. Ive also heard mixed reports as to how they stand up in heavy weather?.
Weatherbeeta half the cost, but I’m not too worried by cost I’d rather get the best fit.
I need to choose ahead of the rain tonight, so Can I ask everyone’s options which they think is best for fit, is it better a little wiither pressure when grazing, or loose on the shoulder when moving?

I don't really like either - sorry. I think the blue one is the better of the two. Can you put a neck cover on it if it's very wet? I used Weatherbeta rugs a few years ago and they were Ok in the rain.

Thanks, can I ask why? And any suggestions for better?

definitely the weatherbeeta, i don’t think the wug is going to do a great deal of good when they spend most of their time with their head down!

My other option is to try a swish rug, he’s got a waterproof fly rug from them, but it’s still a bit tight on the withers, anyone got any views on those?
with his deep neck and narrow shoulders I seem to get to tight on withers or too low on shoulders 🤔

If you get your hand in to check as they are grazing then there is little wither pressure from a Wug, and what there is is well dissipated. I take rug fit very seriously and have checked this out as they are grazing.

Looking at the pic there is at leat as much wither pressure from the non Wug other rug? The Wug design is better at keeping the wet from getting in at the front of the rug in wet weather than a standard cut rug without a neck.

I have now bought my other oldie a 250g Rhino Wug varilayer turnout, and it fits her fine, too - she loves it.

This is my problem they all seem a bit tight over the withers (wug or not) when he grazes unless the neck hangs too low on the shoulder, he does spend a lot of time head down so I’m really not sure what to do, it will only be used a few days max at a time, he’s never had a wug or neck cover before so not overly worried by wet getting in the front, just don’t want any pressure points developing. It’s one reason I like the memory foam pad of the weatherbeeta

i’ve only got swish stable rugs, but i really rate them! friend has turnouts for her chunky welsh and they fit well, if a tiny bit dress-like due to her height🤣

With the wug have you tried putting it on a bit further forwards? I find my Rambo's sit with the front's fairly loose on the shoulders and it looks like you have yours tight on the shoulders and excess length at the back.

I don't personally rate weatherbeetas anymore after having two expensive ones leak from the start. The Rambo's and Rhino's on the other hand have seen me through many storms and are always my go to if I need a serious rug.

Re the fit of the weatherbeeta, I find that rugs that are too big at the shoulders rub the worst on the withers as they pull back tight on the wither as they're not designed to sit there and aren't able to move forwards again. So between the two I'd go for the Rambo.

Save your money, don't buy the WB! I have had 3 Dynamics and all 3 leaked with moderate rain. I finally gave up and bought a Rambo which has been superb and because it doesn't leak my horse is so much warmer!

Just for the reasons you gave. I used to use Weatherbeta rugs and they fitted well. I tend to use Shires now as they fit my pony well and I think for the money are a good buy. For my last mare I had a Rambo Duo, which was great as with the liners one rug did all seasons. That was in the days when I earnt good money!

Thanks all, I’m leaning towards the weatherbeeta due to the memory foam wither pad and fitting a little better here, since he spends most of his time with his head down rather than moving about a lot, the Wb does have a three year guarantee so at least they should replace it if it leaks!

I was wondering about this, but would need to let him wear it a while to see if it just slips back to the same place again, then I can’t return it. The tail seam was sitting on his tail, so I think the length is good

Mine was replaced twice because of the leaking, it wasn’t remotely waterproof, after the second replacement they said they wouldn’t replace it again so I’m currently trying to sell it as I don’t trust them anymore (i used WB rugs for years)

Thank you everyone, the weatherbeeta with 50g liner survived last night with no leaks so fingers crossed, tomorrow nights will be a big test! It sat nice and not too tight on his withers no rubs so far, in fact it was the liner that was tight 🤔 I may invest in some WB ones to match the shape of the outer
