Every morning for the past 2 months, my Dane has left us a big stinky present on the kitchen floor. Sometimes 2 and my husband is going mad!!!

She's just over a year old and rarely had accidents as a pup because we made sure she went out regularly, got up during the night etc. From then til now, she's had the occasional accident but the last 2 months it EVERY morning and OH is threatening to make her live outside :(

I have problems getting her out last thing at night if she doesn't want to go. She loves her bed and is fast asleep on it from about 8pm. When it comes to putting her out at night, if she doesn't want to get up, she wont. She's massive and I can't force her. Even if I do make her get up by tempting her outside with some ham or something, she'll just sit at the door or batter it until I let her back in. Me going out with her doesn't work. She sits at the door while I'm walking round the garden in the dark trying to get her to do the toilet.

Last night she did go out, I saw her poop. There was still a poop on the kitchen floor this morning!!! How is that possible??? If she has done the toilet and hasn't eaten anything else in between, how can she possibly poo AGAIN?

We have tried staying up til midnight or later and letting her out. She may or may not poo but there will always be one in the morning. Tried getting up at 5am, she goes out, sits on the door step, batters the door. I let her in and go back to bed and get up at 7am to a poo :(

She now gets 2 meals a day and we've tried giving her dinner early at 4pm and later at 8pm. Neither makes a difference :(

Please help as my OH is going mad and to be honest, it's really beginning to grate on me too!

I am having the same issues with mine at the moment and she is about 19mths! She too would have the odd accident but recently she has been really good. Then, all of a sudden I was getting up to a nice 'present' each morning and she was pooing a lot throughout the day on walks as well. Realised I hadn't wormed her for a bit (oops!) so got some wormer and gave her a dose. Later that day she did a poo and there was a nasty in worm in it. I felt pretty bad :(

Thought that had cured the problem and it did stop for a couple of nights but now it's started again!! She is most ashamed by it but i am not sure how to stop it. Mine goes out 3 times a day plus the odd trip to the stables maybe twice a day and basically poos on every walk and then goes out last thing at night for a wee.

It is really frustrating. I think mine may have been worse these last 2 weeks as I have been off work on hols and have been up about an hour later on a morning so I am hoping she may go back to normal next week when i am back to normal waking up hours!

Have you wormed yours recently? It could be she needs worming if not - mine was visibly a bit uncomfortable/irritated about pooing just before I wormed her but i must remember to keep on top of it as she's b*gger for finding things to eat (rotten old rabbits etc) which doesn't help!

I feel your pain! Mine had done one by the time I got home yesterday after being walked at lunchtime, I then walked him again at about 4pm. I then went for a quick ride and was out of the house for max 1.5hours to get home to discover that I hadn't properly shut the stair gate and he did a huge sloppy one in our bedroom  :(

And unrelated but this morning, god knows how he managed to roll in something (I walk him in the dark, but swear he didn't roll in anything, he has a flashing collar so I can see him) but it earnt him a cold hose outside with fairy liquid at 7am, darn dog! It wasn't fox poo, might have been badger, it was vile, and I only notice when I patted him and it went all over my hands

Would an option be putting in a dog flap? Does she poo by the door? I would certainly put down a little newspaper and see if she uses that. Also if you can try feeding her at different times to see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like laziness on the dog's part for not going out last thing at night - especially as she's pooing overnight. I personally would get her up last thing at night and make sure she has a poo before you go to bed. A lot of work and effort but something that should pay off. Otherwise I would crate her - she's less likely to want to mess in her bed and encourage her to hold it if she doesn't want to go before bed.

All of the above and try crate training her. It's unlikely she'll go I her own bed.

It does sound like she doesn't know how to hold it all night though if you were taking her out in the middle if the night up till recently...?

Sometimes she will poo before bed but she'll still do one overnight.

Yep, up to date with worming.

No to dog flap. She's a Great Dane. It'd be enourmous. Plus we have sliding glass doors so no where to put one anyway.

She poos at the opposite end of the kitchen to the door. Right in front of the cooker usually.

There are outside lights on both the house and the stables which I always put on at night so she's not in darkness.

Haven't tried taking her out on a lead but sometimes she will poo at bedtime but there is still one in the morning. How can she poo so much??

Can't crate train as she's massive and there isn't enough room for a crate. I have a collie too and she'd be squashed into a tiny corner if I did that. There'd be no room for anything else in the kitchen :(

We only took her out in the middle of the night til she was about 5 months old. She's now 14 months and has been doing this pooing since she turned a year. Thought it might be to do with her season but she's still doing it when not in season.

She is lazy and stubborn. She asks to go out during the day when she needs to. She'll paw the door (read that as batter til it seems like the glass will break) so why can't she do the same at night??? She obviously knows how to ask out.

She obviously knows how to ask out.

But if you're in bed you won't hear her......

So, why not take her out with you last thing when you do last checks on the horses? She'll have the opportunity to meander about and have a good old poo and wee if she needs one.

Do it every day, and she'll soon get in to the swing of it.

Oh and can't really take her for a walk as such as both me and hubby work nights and have a 6yr old child. So if he's working or I'm working, can't really leave her alone asleep in the house :(

Bedroom is on the other side of the kitchen so should be able to hear her. Never hear anything but as soon as I open my eyes, I can smell it! Yep, she does come out to do the horses if I can get her off her bed!!! Husband has better luck dragging her out but quite often she just sits by the door. He has no patience for her and I try and do the horses and encourage her into the garden at the same time. But as I say, sometimes she will poo but there will still be one there in the morning?!!! How can she have emptied herself at 10pm but still produce 1 or sometimes 2 poops during the night??

Just because this hasn't been covered and letting her our doesn't seem to work, what are you feeding her?

I have to make mine get up to go for a last minute wee/poo, he's always fast asleep by that stage of the evening :)

She gets Burns fish and maize twice a day. She used to get fed raw but my supplier closed down and there is no where else I can get from without paying a fortune in delivery so I swapped to Burns. I expected some upset when I first changed, but 2 months later???

Does she have to be fed twice a day? (I don't know anytihng about such big dogs). If you could feed her just in the morning and maybe just a biscuit at night hopefully all that has to be processed will have been through?

I have a similar kind of problem and have also just posted. My smallest dog, just 12 months old, will not stop going to the toilet in his bed, both types. He is crated when we are not there and over night and without fail there will either be a wee or a poo in his bed. If we are around he will ask to go out and he will go. Quite often at night he will just sit and stare at me while the other dog goes out and Im trying to make him go to the toilet. My problem seems to be anxiety related but really cant think of anything to make him stop, anyone have any ideas?

Feed her once a day or go back onto raw - Prize Choice is available from Pets at Home, there is also Natural Instinct which has lots of distributors, if you're anywhere near a greyhound track or greyhound trainer, that is a great place to source raw.
Feed by eye, not the recommendation on the bag, it's an inanimate object, it doesn't know your dog.

You're giving her way too many options. MAKE her go out. Put a slip lead or similar power steering on her and get her out there. Put a dog guard or baby gate over the back door and ignore her blattering at it.

Raw is always available if you look for it,for instance Tesco do gurt bags of raw chook wings.Feed midday, physically walk her at 10pm,put newspapers down in "the spot" till you are sure she`s got it.You cannot really blame her for what is a reaction to the wrong food and nor can your OH.

Also, there's no point in your OH getting angry....as alluded to in the other post, if the dog is told off or gets body language/negative vibes (even a change of mood is perceptible to a dog, my dog knows I have lost my temper before I do), it will not make her stop pooing in the house, it will just make her continue to do it when you are not around/hide it from you.

Only a thought but how about letting dog sleep in bedroom with you or leaving bedroom door open. My bc comes into bedroom and stands by side of bed staring at me and wagging his tail until I get up to let him out, he is also lazy about pooing last thing at night and then seems desperate when he wakes me as he dashes out - when you have to go, you have to go!

Try the most simplest of things first

1, Make her last feed alot earlier than 8pm (switch to as early as you can get it and make it the smallest meal of the day) so if she gets 2 meals why not one for breakfast and last one at 4pm.

2, Place a black out blind at the kitchen (make the room pitch black) alot of dog will wee/pooh when dawn breaks as they associate this with "day light" and daylight means (activity) going out/you getting up! get a blind asap.

3, When you stir on a morning (before you even go to the toilet) yourself (go down and let the dogs out) when dogs hear movement in the house they again associate someone "coming soon" and when they don't appear and the dog has wipped it's self in to a small frenzy they pass a motion and in this case it's usually pooh:p

4, Put a radio on to block out disturbing noises (something may be waking her) and she is then up on her feet and pacing around.

5, Try and get her out in a positive manner, maybe an association with a luxury treat (squirt of primula b4 and after she goes to the bog:p) she she begins to associate it appearance from the fridge as "cue for the toilet" but don't drag her out (this will only lead to a negative association)

Some single coated wussey breeds don't like getting out of their pit for the bog (my rotti) is not a wuss but she is bloody lazy for going out in the garden (only difference is she can hold her own for days):D and has never dirtied indoors, belive it or not as walks are late today cos I am waiting in for the sky man she has not been out today (all the rest have) but she is snoring her tats off on the bloody settee of all places:rolleyes:

Anxiety at being left alone?
What breed is he?
How many meals and what food?
What kind of bed is in the crate?
How big is the crate in comparison to him?

Those are both really good things to remember, we have double curtains and I always make sure the living room door is shut so the light doesn't come through from the kitchen as as soon as it is light or my dog hears people up and about in the morning, mine will start squeaking! And yes, that does mean flashing all the commuters a shot of my pyjamas/dressing gown :p

Can I just ask - you sound like you have stables at you house (lucky thing!) does she ever go a help herself to any horse food?? I think this may be part of the issue with mine as, in the evening she is coming to the yard and she is such a pig she steals any dropped feed. As much of this is grass nuts type feed I am thinking this is swelling up in her stomach and causing the issue - also grass is a laxative anyway. My dog poos A LOT so I can no understand why she has suddenly gort worse but it ties in with her pigging horse feed!

Just a thought.
