Currently got my 6yr old in a single jointed loose ring happy mouth, however I think he's finding the 'nutcracker' effect too much. He has a sensitive mouth and is just starting to learn to take up more contact, but is forever trying to curl his lips up and just seems uncomfortable.

I was perhaps thinking of trying something with a lozenge?

Any help much appreciated!!

Hello, we currently have our 5 year old tb In a French link training bit...

http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/...-training/french-link-training-bit-32887.html

She also used to be in a happy mouth but just chew through it after a while, so we made the transition to metal! She goes lovely in this bit and I would say she is actually happier in it than the 'happy' mouth!:)

And yes the nutcracker action doesn't seem to suit many tbs I know.. I would def give French link a go!

Good luck..

Probs should have mentioned this, duh!...

I tried him in a french link a few months ago and he was absolutely awful in it. Head in the air, totally unhappy. It was on the thin side though which I guess would have made it more harsh??

I was thinking about trying a Neue Scheule (sorry if that's spelt wrong!!) but don't know of anyone who has used them!

TBH I've never had a problem with a normal single joint snaffle with any horse I've ever owned or trained.

HAve had a lot of TB's off the track and I usually put them into a Fulmer with a drop and have found that this works well.

It takes a lot of time to rebalance them from racing frame to 'dressage' frame - leaning is something they like to do.

Keep your contact soft and light but always there and ride them forward into it. Again this is one of the problems you have with TB's off the track, they are used to going because they have influence from other horses around them and moving off the leg is quite new to them.

TEaching long and low is a key way to get these lovely horses to accept hand and leg. Heaps of school movements, circles, loops, serpentines, transitions between paces and within paces along with frequent changes of direction keeps their minds busy and focused on you.

Thanks, we've been doing tonnes of the above schooling and he's come on HEAPS in terms of learning to go from the leg into the hand. Whilst he is becoming more accepting, he's still faffing with his mouth and looking uncomfortable... I think his tongue is also quite big. This is why I was thinking about swapping bits.

He's never raced but is Wetherbys passported so I imagine his training was done with racing in mind...

Copper roller? I've only ever seen them single jointed & they are on the thin side, but most horses I've met like the feel of them.

Mylers r good bits. I also tried mine in a French link fulmer, which was one of the better responses.
However have ended up going bitless and have a Dr Cooke. Best thing I ever did! We hack, jump. School etc. No pulling at reins, no over bending, now listens to the leg and bends, stops etc. Don't get me wrong, we still have our silly.moments, but I feel.loads safer! Bits r such a mine field! Hope u get something that works.x
