Help! Blackening a saddle

Has anyone managed to redye/oil their saddle successfully? I have a black albion which is faded on the panels and back of the seat to a greeny black colour. Have tried to google it but seems like there a really mixed opinions on how to do it and whether you get a good result so any advice appreciated.

I asked a saddler and was told not to bother because it wouldn't look good.

You need to polish with normal good quality shoe polish but must do it properly so you don't get any residue! Basically it is put the polish on with a cloth in small circles and then buff with a soft shoe brush till your arms drop off. Do this a few times and you will be really pleased and if done properly will not have stained breeches etc. It will only mark jods etc if you have not buffed enough.
