I need to find someone who has seen this before...canter on the left rein her right hind is not working correctly, looks like something somewhere is catching?

Long story short -

It was fine & then one day like this, left rein only, right rein is fine. Had done nothing out of the ordinary in the run up to the change in the canter.

Vet did lameness work up & she was sound all round. Sent her to nuerlogist @ RVC, deemed a "normal horse" no nuero signs what so ever. Reffered her to an Orthapaedic vet at RVC who re did lameness work up, again sound. Blocked below & above the hock no significant change. X-rayed stifle nothing abnormal. Noticed slight improvement after a weekend in her box so she has been in her box since (about 10 weeks), prescribed steroids beginning with P (sorry can't remember name), since then has been getting better then worse then better then worse, doesn't matter if she is worked, not worked, straightlines, circles, lunged etc it just changes intermittantly never quite disappearing. She is having wedges put behind to see if this helps. Physio coming out on Friday.

So I am asking if anyone has ever seen this before...my vet hasn't (extremely experienced lameness vet), the nuerologist hasn't, orthapaedic vet hasn't, he sent the videos off to some colleagues abroad & they haven't seen it either.

Please pass on to anyone who might have seen this if we can just get an idea of where the problem might be that would be a start.

Thanks - one very confused horse owner :-(

Sorry this is not going to be better news

But yes I have. My last horse had it. Like you say only in canter and very intermittent. My lads got slightly worse so that his hind would progress to actually drag behind almost like it was going to fall off. Especially if you pushed and tried to collect the canter when it was acting up. (I only did this to see what would happen, vets advise)

The really odd thing was that the next day he would be sound!!

Vets never managed to get to the bottom of it so I retired him from competing and he went to a friend to hack/hunt. It was only school work/lunging/jumping that it showed up so he was fine for everything else

He also had EPSM so they could only think it was linked to that

Has it anything to do with the ground? My lad was much better on a harder surface.

same on all surfaces, straightline, circle, soft etc...somedays it's a bit better, other days much worse.

Did his suddenly come on as well? Was his in one leg on one rein? She even does it when she gets disunited. Am thinking of having the EPMS test done to try rule that out.

Humm not sounding too good however...

Just out of interest have you thought about trying McTimoney? Not saying it will definietly work but I had problems with my horse where his left canter was very similar, just not right. Every other pace was fine and right canter was fine. I had McTimoney on him and he was fine after a few days (have had a few sessions since as he slips back occasionally).
I had the vet out at the time and he said he had no idea what was wrong and suggested I try McTimoney or similar.

It did look very similar to what your horse is doing. FWIW, I also had a physio out who made no difference and couldn't find anything wrong.

I honestly think he had it from the beginning.
He was very fat and unfit when I got him, so I took my time getting him fit. It showed up intermittently almost as soon as I started circle work in canter. one rein one hind.
Old YO/instructor said he was just lazy

Then when the EPSM was at its worst (he got lazy so I fed him up, which made it worse) he would do it much more often and started the hopping going into canter on both reins. Once I switched to the diet it happened very rarely BUT badly, but only when we asked him to work hard and correctly. He got so bad as he was then refusing to canter and was so backward thinking.

Once I got him on the diet the change happened within weeks. He was a different horse for a long time.

Despite the improvements he was never easy and I think it goes a long way to explain why he was always VERY reluctant to work in an outline and thro from behind correctly. As this is what I wanted in a horse I gave him to my friend.

Not sure if that answers your questions. feel free to keep asking I've nothing better to do right now as stuck at home in a cast
