Help, confused about dog coat sizing

I have just bought a waterproof dog coat for my collie dog for winter. I measured him from the base of his neck to the base of his tail which came in to 70cm so I then bought a 70cm dog coat. However when it arrived I tried it on him and it dwarfs him! It would probably happily fit a large GSD...

Have I measured him wrong and if so, how should I measure him?

Are there any types of coats which are better for the lurcher type shaped dogs?

For your dog you should measure from the white /cream boundary at the shoulder to where your hand stops when you lift the tail up vertically.
You can get roach back coats but your fellow should be better in a flat back style

Hi Thanks - he measures at 65cm? I still think that's too big? I think, looking at him in the 70cm he's better in a 55cm?

I've realised why I am confused - I do coat sizing in inches :) My greyhounds generally seem to be square - their coat size is pretty much the same as their height to the shoulder, so your boy would take a 24" coat?

I don't normally put coats on my Border Collies, but my old boy (now 15 years old) was cold last winter, so I bought him a 2nd hand coat, 20", he is a small Collie boy.

Oenoke - I'll admit, he doesn't need a coat but as he comes home so filthy this is purely for my benefit!
Piclenash, thanks :)
