my pony had a warm hard lump on her cannon bone just below her knee, she has been on box rest for 4 weeks, as we believed it was a splint. But recently it has got scabby and the lump gets smaller when the scab falls off. What is this?? Anyone experienced it before??

I haven't got in touch with the vet because it is so expensive and I only thought it was a splint so rest and no hard work, but I though maybe an abscess???

Yeah, but they are cheap to keep and small enough to shoot yourself instead of calling a vet.

goat stew...... mmmmm

Ha! That's the argument I used to persuade OH we needed some ducks (well, maybe not shoot but...) And it was a whole 3 weeks before our first trip to vet with a poorly duck. Of course it was a bank holiday weekend so £120 later...!

OP - for goodness sake, call the vet. Please.

If this isn't a wind up..

A call out for a vet is about £50, plus any charges for drugs if needed. Fee would be less if you could box to vets or share call out if you're on livery. If this is not possible then you need to consider whether you can really afford 2 horses. Not getting the vet when there is a query over a horses health invariably ends up costing more in money, time and sometimes the horses life. If you thought it was a splint, this is pretty well documented on how to deal with via Google and unless there is a complication (diagnosed by a Vet) then 4 weeks box rest is excessive.

thanks everyone for serious replies, it was appreciated, just getting it clear that me and my mum share my horses and she has a lot of experience. Her mum and her mum's mum had horses so yes I do have a sensible adult who knows what she is talking about and does get he vet out if he thinks NECESSARY, but she didn't so I wanted to learn a bit more, see if anyone had he same problem. my pony is not in pain or discomfort, those of you who think that Box rest for 4 weeks is long, personally I don't
Thank you everyone

It would appear that you have misdiagnosed this problem and kept the pony stuck in a stable for four weeks, to put it politely p............ you appear to be ......... well I can't think of how to put it politely, I think you will be better to go to facebook for diagnosis of your problem.

As it happens my pony went in the ménage and the field for short amounts of time regularly whilst I kept her 'stuck in the stable'. Unfortunately it clearly isn't good enough, although, I'm pretty sure she went out more than some of the horses I know who really are 'stuck in'. As for mis-diagnosis, vets do that all the time, just like a different horse on my yard who was kept in for over two months (because of vets) turns out it was rather simple to sort by the back man.
Thanks a bunch

You are very confused, you don't know what box rest is, you don't know what is wrong, you don't know how to treat it.
You don't understand that most of the people on here are animal lovers who try do the best for their horses and they would not risk misdiagnosis of a condition they don't understand, they would rather call a vet out. I don't know how many times you need to be told this, it is not sinking in.

I don't only think four weeks box rest it's wrong, I think it's illegal to diagnose your pony for yourself and leave it without very treatment for an injury which you think has required four weeks box rest.

I listen to everything my mum says and she said box rest because everyone on my yard believed it was a splint, which was not reducing in size so I cold hosed it and massaged it everyday. my pony was turned out a few days ago and now her leg is being rested, and hurray it is decreasing in size, so clearly what we are doing is working. I only wrote on this page to see if anyone had tho before

Its free to call your vet and they will advise if they think they need to come out, some vets have free zone visit days so you don't pay for callout. If horse is lame at all on it then its a vet you need !
