Took Tilly out for another walk tonight along the road (about a mile or so) and when I got back and took her boots off I noticed she had a lovely crack running straight down the middle of her front L hoof, from base to coronet band.

Its about 1mm deep and 1/2 mm wide.

Any ideas?

Forgot to add, she is unshod atm as only 3 and not backed yet. She has her feet trimmed every 6-7 weeks and the farrier always comments on how good her feet are.

Have tried contacting farrier tonight but can't get through - will get him up asap to see what he can do.

It could just be superficial, especially since she has good feet; we've been having wet then dry then wet weather and many of the horses that are out have superficial vertical cracks in their hooves.
Hope you manage to get hold of the farrier

Farrier is up at 4 this afternoon so hopefully he'll be able to sort it out! Will probably have a set of front shoes put on as we will be doing some more walking on the road and I suspect that is the culprit!

Hmm, its a good job my farriers horse is on the same yard as mine

He pretty much laughed at me for worrying about nothing!!

Anyways, he said it can be quite normal when the hoof gets soaked/dried/soaked/dried etc and he said the walking on hard ground when she's not used to it probably didn't help. Anyways on Monday she will be having her first pair of shoes fitted in front and he is going to trim/file the foot to reduce the appearance of the crack as it is so superficial. She'll have quarter clips on rather than a toe clip also as the crack is straight down the middle where the toe clip would sit. Other than that I am overworrying about nothing and I probably won't be able to tell that there was anything there in 2 months

Yep! Im just totally neurotic and need shooting! I swear that horse is destined to drive me insane - she currently has a series of funny little bumps on the inside of her hind legs (almost like the start of warts/sarcoids so keeping a close eye on them!), a lovely "egg" over part of her hind extensor tendon (tendon is fine, she's just clobbered herself) is moulting and growing and looks a bit of a mess tbh and has several chunks missing from her head and neck that I suspect is her obsession with eating hedges!
