Hi. My horse has cut each of his legs he did 2 last week, small cuts but theyve been nursed back to full health. Above his knees. He is kicking himself, flies I am guessing, and cutting himself and there is blood trickling down hit white legs so maybe it looks worse than it is, but having had him only a week I am so upset. He has never had shoes on so would it help if I took this set of shoes off? They were put on by previous owner for vetting etc to prevent any costly incidents etc. What do I do? I have brought him in this morning and will go down lunchtime. Thanks, any advice grateefully received. PS, the fly stuff I am using is really good (through lots of trial and error) and I have put sulphur poweder in his legs / feathers to prevent mites so ....where do I go from here?

If he's kicking behind his front legs, it might be worth having a very close look for mites? Guessing it's the horse in your sig, then if he's got lots of feathers it might be hard to spot them.

yes that is the man in question....ah we had a good look and couldnt spot them but i thought they might be more obvious than perhaps they are? i washed him down and rubbed in the sulphur powder but perhaps tonight ill keep him in and mix with the pig oil? what should i be looking for please? really worried about him. in answer to the other post, no he does not need shoes on, it was just preferred choice at the time, never had shoes on before now, would taking them off help? i think i might have to try that.....thank you, any more tips gratefully received, ive always shared / loan horses but never had my own and seems jinxed already (thankfully not behavioural wise!)

If the cuts are on the front of his knees on his front legs it is more likely he is biting them than kicking himself. I would try frontline instead of sulphar for mites, the oil won't help mites and might make him more itchy.

Is he out on his own or with others? Could he be kicked by someone else? the front of his front knee would be a bit of a stretch to kick himself.

If he doesn't need shoes on and has not had then on I would take them off purely for a cost benifit. x

thanks everyone. it is the front of his back legs and the back of his front legs. he was on his own but tonight ive put him in the main paddock with all the others, a terrifying prospect but he did me proud, was very submissive and backed down to everyone. im still being a chicken and going back to check him in a minute tho! ive spent so much on so many different "remedies", someone else mentioned that benzyl benzoate stuff? ive not tried the pig oil yet, just the sulphur but yes could be irritating him even more, he is definitely used to such pampering and lotions etc. re shoes, tempted to take them off, indeed to save money.

ah that makes more sense the if it is the back of his front legs.
(also you confused me with the name change when I tried to find this earlier! LOL)

I would think mites tbh, and as a feathered owner I tried everything to get rid of them without clipping the feathers off.

The only thing that worked was frontline bought from the vets in a big spray bottle. worth giving a try he might be getting hot and itchy under the feather too. maybe knock the suphar on the head in case it is irritating him.
