Can I pick your brains please?

My horse has a graze on his stifle and it is obviously sore for him.

Yesterday in the field, and I have no idea how he did this, but his rug slipped and ended up upside down on him! All the straps were in very good order as it was a newish rug. Anyway, he panicked and the rug was in shreds around his hind legs and he has a nasty graze on his near side stifle.
I can only think that maybe he caught it in the hedge or my other horse bit his rug (they are very playful together) and made it slip over.

I cleaned the graze last night and again this morning and put dermagel on it. This morning there is a small swelling under the cut, and this swelling has not increased in size since. He is obviously sore for me to touch it and dress it, but he is not lame. Also, the gash does not appear to be deep. He is up to date on his tetanus jabs.

I have kept him in today so that I can keep a close eye on the cut.

I am wondering whether I should have turned him out though, and should I get the vet? Obviously, if the swelling increases at all or if he starts to be lame I will get the vet.

I always favour turning out unless advised not to or the horse is obviously very lame. You may find he will stiffen up if left in and any swelling will increase. I would turn him out even if only for an hour or two.

I would prob give the vet a ring and see what they say, and poss email them a pic of where the swelling is? Am just wondering even if its not that deep is it near the joint? in which case some precautionary ABs might not be a bad idea?
