Hello, I noticed my pony's skin coming off around his ears. I know he is molting but there was also some bloody and insects the first day. Please see images. He didn't seem to bothered by it ( itching or rubbing). I put some NAF d-itch thick ointment on it for a few days. ( Which he absolutely hated, didn't want me to touch the area. He was lifting his head up, and thought he was going to rear at one point.) The ointment seemed to have helped and there doesn't seem to be any flies or anything crawling now, which is good. But there is still tiny black things. Don't know if it's dried blood, or eggs. See second lot of images. This isn't inside his ear, it's more so on the outside/side of his ears. Can anyone help diagnosis please and any suggestions. Would rather stay away from ointment if I can or touching his ears to put stuff on it. As he hates it and me now. But I know it's for his welfare and I've also spoken to the vet on the phone and he doesn't seem to be to worried and I said it might be aural plaque. Where to put fly repellent on. (Conversation over phone. Due to Covid 19)
Thank you

It doesn't sound like aural plaques, usually white growths inside the ears not hair loss on the outside, could it be lice and the change of coat making them more visible, also some horses will have a bit of rainscald type damage, often the ears get it, the coat change can then be a but dramatic and leave them a bit bald in places which is then vulnerable to fly bites, my old pba has this in a few places despite being fairly carefully managed this winter he looks rather moth eaten on his shoulders and tips of ears, once the coat change is finished he will look fine but for now I am leaving the ears alone and just giving the rest of him a groom.

At the start it was black and yellow and red from what looked like bites and some flies were around him. Then once I put the ointment no flies were around him and still small black dots on the side / outside of his ear. Wish I could show the photos :(

Horses don't get fleas so that is out, do check for lice as they can leave tiny blood spots but there may still be a few flies on him unless you are with him 24/7 they can be missed, midges are more active at dawn and dusk, if he will let you touch them just pop some fly repellent on your hand and gently stroke them to apply it.

I'll check for lice then thank you! Sadly he won't let me touch his ears without getting hugely stressed out. Is there like a flea / lice treatment to put on there neck. Like they have for dogs and cats. Sorry I've never come across this before

That looks like a type of rainscald or sweat rash, possibly both as the weather is so warm and he has a thick coat still, the flies probably contributed by irritating it, I would not be too concerned as it is likely to resolve fairly quickly without too much bother, if he will let you wipe a damp cloth over it at some point that will clean up the dried blood but if he is too distressed to deal with I would leave it and see how it is in the next few days, it looks worse than it is, I have seen a lot worse get better with minimal intervention.

Arh thank you!
Sadly he is getting too stressed for me around his ears, even the top of his head. And I tried to dry out if mane, as its greedy from the oil and he won't let me do that. So I'll leave it and hopefully will clear up.. Will continue to keep an eye on it. Thanks
