I would appreciate views on what sort of saddle to get-- I am still dithering around about what to buy-- I had been thinking about a GP saddle, but not sure. My previous riding ( I am somewhat recently returned after a 5 year break) was mostly in a close contact/jumping saddle. I had various brands before finding my fav, which turned out to be an Henri di Revel close contact saddle. Loved it. I had a more expensive one-- Butet perhaps-- ?? don't remember for sure-- except that I remember it felt like riding on a plank of wood. And that I did not like it at all, so sold it.

I know I do not want to do dressage exclusively-- and I would like to do some jumping-- so thought perhaps a GP would be the way to go.

But I spent most of my riding life in a close contact saddle-- am I going to find life a lot different in a GP saddle?

Perhaps a nice Henri di Revel close contact saddle is the way to go... the more I look, the more confused I get about what I even want!!!

Help!!! :p:eek:

Well, I am now the proud owner of a new saddle!

I went to the local saddlery, to see what they had. One thing they have is this a simulated horse where you can get on and have a test ride in the saddle. I thought it was great fun-- an adult version of the horse at the grocery store sort of ride. You kick it to make it go faster, and pull on the reins to slow it. After sitting in 3 saddles-- well-- I got the third-- loved the feel of it. I tried GP and jump and surprise surprise surprise I am in a jump saddle. And the best thing was, the price was knocked down crazy mad a few hundred pounds due to the slightest nick in the cantle. Like it will not be at risk of being nicked and banged about the first time I ride in it! Its a saddle, not a museum piece.

Delighted.

Whilst I'm pleased you like it, does your horse not get a say?! They're the ones who have to wear it.

You are going to get it fitted by a professional before you part with your money aren't you ?
Bargain it may be but if it does not fit your horse it could end up costing more than you think.

My reponse to your original question would have been - whatever fits the horse best and you best, get a good saddle fitter out and see what fits your horse, then out of those which you prefer.

You could cause your horse major harm through using an ill fitting saddle.
