My best friend just called. She lives abroad and there is no night/emergency vet where she lives. Her 2yo 30kg dog just ate her Carbimazole (thyroid medication for overactive thyroid). She only found out a few hours after the fact as he took the box as well. She's not sure how many tablets were left but estimates at least 20. Does anyone know how worried she should be/if there's anything she can do or give him. She called the poison control centre for humans but they didn't have any advice.

I'm no expert so please feel free to ignore my advice!

My mum takes thyroid meds (I can't remember if it's over or under active) and she ended up ODing on them and ended up with severe chest pain, so I would be worried - there is no way my mum took as many as 20!

I would recommend calling other vets to get an emergency appointment and keep a close eye on him / her.

Sadly she lives in the mountains in Bavaria, so I don't know what the situation with "other" vets is. I know it's a 40 minute drive to her usual vet who is in the nearest small town, but they don't offer night cover.
There doesn't seem to be much information on acute overdose of this drug online. Can find tons on overdose of underactive thyroid drugs, but not much on overactive. So worried for her. I always feel so grateful we have access to night vets here.

Yes be worried. Does the vet not even have a forwarding emergency number? Has she tried other vets in the country. As a last resort she could call the aspca in the USA as they have a comprehensive poison control centre but she would be charged by them for the call.

Cefyl, thanks for the tip. Will pass it on.

Finding it very hard to find any concrete information about this particular active agent. I gather if it were the underactive thyroid drugs, then toxic dose is very high and the J. Vet. Med. indicates that dosage is so much higher in dogs than in humans that acute overdose is very unusual. .. But the Carbimazole seems to be a bit of a mystery, unless I'm looking in the wrong place?

She's just got hold of a night vet in another town and has decided to take him there to be on the safe side.

Will let you know what happens when she gets back to me (I'm guessing in the morning). Fingers crossed for the dog. Scary stuff. She said he's never stolen anything out of the bathroom before, let alone taken a box of pills. But it only takes the once. So far he's cheerful and hopefully it will all have been one huge panic. Fingers crossed.

She needs to find whatever vet is next nearest and does provide night cover and ring them, even if they are hours away.

Just got a text message to say her dog is fine this morning, acting normal, but staying at vet for 24 hours just in case - Sounds positive. What a scare!!

Just wanted to update here.
The dog is fine - YAY! He did have a few very itchy days about 3 days following the incident, but no further side effects.
The good outcome is that my friend has changed vet - the place she went to that night is only about 15 minutes further than her usual vet and they are better equipped for emergencies and small animals in general.
