My 14 year old gelding has a ridiculously itchy sheath, it has been itchy for about 2 months. But it was cleaned by a vet with a bit of hibiscrub about a week ago, no maggots - just smegma but it's still itchy! Cleaned his sheath again today, it wasn't very dirty, but ridiculously itchy. He enjoyed the scratch alot. He tries to scratch it constantly in the field with his hind legs. But this isn't normal for him, it's only been this itchy for a couple of months? He swishes his tail as it constantly, because it irritates him so much! :( He also isn't peeing as strongly or as often. I can't call the vet, so please don't suggest this because we have him on loan and the owner doesn't want to. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated as we've run out of ideas! Just want him to be comfortable - which he isnt at the moment! :)

So he has had a very itchy sheath for 2 months but only saw a vet a week ago. And you can't call a vet because the owner doesn't want to. So why don't you tell the owner that you are going to call the vet and that you will pay for it as you have the pony on loan and don't want to see him looking so uncomfortable?

Personally I couldn't stand back and watch a horse in my care (as in a loan) with 'a ridiculously itchy sheath' and 'also isn't peeing as strongly or as often'. It sounds to me like it needs further investigation.

Be careful cleaning it, you don't want to make it worse, particularly if you're using a product.
When cleaning I normally just squirt it with a bit of baby oil as per vets instructions.

If I were you I'd get the vet back out or failing that at least ring them for advice.

Wouldnt have thought a vet would use hibiscrub either ?

Poor boy, check for the bean or get the vet if you dont know ow to do it, get some sheath cleanerser andrub some of that up inside his sheath to put back the correct oils and ph. Hope you get it sorted for the ponys sake.

I'm no expert on sheaths, but I wouldn't have thought hibiscrub was the best thing to use. If the owner didn't mind the vet coming a week ago, then I don't see the issue with them coming back. Either way it needs a vet to it as 2mnths of discomfort is far too long.

Test first for allergies - my boy is severly allergic to baby oil so really wouldn't want it anywhere near his "bits":eek::eek:

Sorry re. baby oil.
Was not recommending it but just saying what I use with my boy as per my vet :)

Would def be getting vet out in this case so agree with all above
